Yes! Penalty shoot out. Hope Jabulani drama doesn't ruin this.

Really really really wish the first shootout could have been on Saturday.  [dang] USA you had a great path to get to the semi's.   UGH!

Too bad for Japan. I prefer to see a save rather than a miss. Those ones hurt a little more I think.
Tommy: He's got a line about me. Tell him the line.

Yeah ... I was pulling for them ... they have so much heart for a small team, but the South American teams are so strong fundamentally. Too bad.

Terrific game on our hands here. Very excited for Spain and Portugal.

I think Portugal's defense can stymie Spain similar to Switzerland in the first game. I'm thinking Portugal grab one on a counter attack and win.

Much more frantic and aggressive pace than Japan/Paraguay ... expected, but much more exciting. Defense is going to be the key throughout this one, I think ... not to take away from the previous teams, but the level of expertise is so much higher in this one.

Oh, great job by Casillas to knock the ball away from Almeida

I thought that was a sure goal for Portugal.

Yeah ... great defense ... I think we'll see a lot of the same in this one. (TP)

Spain need a bit more width.

The wing backs, especially the left back, for Portugal are dropping back towards the center to play alongside the center backs to watch Torres. No space for any balls through the middle. Not enough space for Torres to get free. Difficult for the central midfielders to get forward.

Spain need to stretch that back line out a bit more. They're allowing Portugal to shrink the pitch due to their lack of width.

Oh, poor pass by Iniesta and bad take by Torres ... excellent tackle by Carvalho

Spain should have a goal there. The defense was all over the place after that interception (risky passing by Portugal on the edge of their own third), there was a clear passing lane for Iniesta to thread the ball but he failed to make that pass, forced Torres to pull back to retrieve the ball and gave Carvalho time to make a challenge. Wasteful play by Spain.

Ohhh, almost in the net, Almeida's pass deflected off of Puyol.

Excellent workman-like effort from Almeida tonight. He has had very little help but he keeps plugging away out there.

-------------------------------

Portugal's midfield has been very disappointing. Their passing, their inability to keep possession or to forward possession, has been very disappointing.

Spain are doing a great job of closing them down in midfield and hurrying them into sloppy ill-conceived passes and negative back passes.

Wow, I love those types of diving headers. Unlucky for Llorente. Straight at the keeper though.

Still, an excellent chance. Well worked opportunity. Unlucky not to get a goal.

Very exciting game ... lots of blown chances, a lot of great defense and saves. Wow, Spain finally scored ... knew someone would soon ... the odds were in it. Great set-up to that one ... sweet pass between defenders!

Beautiful passing around the box by Spain, excellent through ball (back flick by Xavi) to Villa and good finish (on the second attempt) by Villa.

Portugal are finished. They have shown no attacking chops tonight and look incapable of taking the game to Spain.

Yeah, I agree ... they had some very spirited play early-on, especially defensively, but this half is killing them ... they look very winded and out-matched at this point.

(1) Brazil

(2) Spain
(3) Germany
(4) Argentina

I think those are the best teams in this competition in that order with Brazil well ahead of the others.
