FIFA just announced they bounced that ref that cost the USA the win from the remainder of the World Cup. Fairly big news given that he was a fairly prominent African referee and the WC is in South Africa.
Quite ridiculous that it had to come to this, I still don't understand this vow of silence Fifa has concerning refereeing decisions. If fifa or the ref came out and said 'this is what I saw happen'. The issue would blow over because in the end, we don't have the view the ref had.
Also pretty frustrating result for Australia. Go up a goal against Ghana in the first 15 minutes, only to have our best player Kewell get red carded for a handball (not arguing this call). Ghana slots the penalty kick and we have to play with 10 men for 60 remaining minutes. To add insult to injury, one of the Ghanaian got off free with a challenge from behind (which is an automatic red card right?) which would have evened it to ten a side.
Australia did do a great job of holding Ghana to a draw despite how the night unfolded, but in order to progress now we need to beat Serbia by 3 at least or hope that we win and Ghana beat Germany. Pretty long odds, but with the umpiring decisions, and the plenty of upsets so far. One of these scenarios could definitely eventuate.
Been a pretty awful sporting week for me so far. Australia lose in the WC and draw; Australia lose to England in the Rugby; New South Wales lose the State of Origin (Don't expect many to know what that is); and of course the C's lose the Finals after such an amazing playoff run.
With all these losses, at least i've got Uni study to cheer me up!
