Yeah, I know, it sounds like a complicated deal that involves 4 teams so we can acquire only one player, but I took the known interests and needs of each team involved into account, and I think this deal makes a lot of sense for everybody.
Here it is :
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ylxhccqInterest of the trade :
For Boston : the C's get rid of useless players (except for TA, but there is still a big risk he might go back to "bad TA" soon, so it's not that much of a loss) and acquire Hinrich. They keep their current starting 5 and now have a bench of House/Hinrich/Quis/Baby/Sheed.
It assumes the owners are willing to take on Hinrich's terrible contract for the next years, and thus keep the same core this summer by resigning Ray at a lower price and splitting the MLE to either re-sign some players (House, Quis) or get new ones.
The C's also get Anthony Carter, who could be useful off the bench if need be for a PG. Just here in case of an emergency, and his deal expires this summer.
For Chicago : the Bulls want to free cap space for this summer in order to have enough space to sign 2 max free agents. They refused "spare parts" for Hinrich so far but it's well-known they will accept any deal with expirings prior to the deadline.
They also want to get rid of Thomas who is now in conflict with his coach (and the entire Bulls organization it seems), and trade him a in deal that allows them to get rid of Hinrich's terrible contract, knowing that they wouldn't get much value in a separate deal for Thomas since he is a headcase and has not much value for other teams.
For Denver : the Nuggets are the biggest winners in this deal, in my opinion, and they would do it in a heartbeat. They get rid of two useless players in their rotation (Balkman and Graham, although Graham can contribute from time to time) and finally get the big man they were desperately looking for since the beginning of the season.
They keep their core intact and now have a really good frontline to play against the Lakers : Martin and Nene as starters, Thomas and Andersen for the 2nd unit.
Thomas could cause problems but I think Billups' leadership would keep him in check, and he would provide a lot of positives for the Nuggets with his rebounding, hustle, and athleticism.
Plus, Thomas' contract expires this summer, so, depending on how well he performs with the Nuggets this season, they can either let him go or re-sign him.
For Memphis : the Grizzlies desperately want to improve their bench this season in order to make a run for the playoffs (and potentially get past the first round). CJ Miles from Utah and Dorell Wright from Miami are two wings that they want to acquire but it looks like it's not not going to happen.
The Grizzlies currently have some cap space (about 3 million) so, in this deal, they use it to acquire Joey Graham and Renaldo Balkman from the Nuggets. Both are players that have potential and talent but have not been really good so far. The Grizzlies thus hope they will develop in Memphis, a young team where they will get some playing time in the rotation with the 2nd unit.
What do you think? Is is realistic, does it make sense for each team involved?
I think so, and I would be glad if such a deal happened. I don't think it's really a fantasy deal since GM's make some calls everyday and know what other teams need, so, with a trade that is positive for each team involved, it seems that it could happen before the deadline.
