It's probably 2 fold... He wants his own identity and Nike wants another way to market him.  But I guess this means he's not coming to Boston.

And once again LeBron gives me reasons to dislike him. Not only for his ignorance of Bill Rusell but also for his "I'm the spokesman/messiah of the NBA" quote :

Now, if I'm not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.

How arrogant is that?! Come back to Earth LeBron, you're still ringless. ;)

Drucci, I thought the same thing.  This is the worst of what he said.

I guess he's buying into the whole "King" marketing drivel the NBA pumps out.

Just as an aside about the Larry and Magic international exposure. Players like Dirk, Manu, Peja, Ilgauskas, Kukoc, Smits, Nash, Schremp, Sabonis, Radja, Motumbo, Olajuwan, and Petrovic, you know, the greatest of the foreign born players, became basketball players and fans because of Larry and Magic, not Michael. The international exposure of the NBA and worldwide love of the game happened because of the Magic/Larry, Lakers/Celtics rivalry of the early and mid 80's and not because of MJ.

MJ was a great marketing tool for the game and one of it's greatest players ever. But the adulation that LeBron and other younger NBA players have for him is the same adulation and love that a generation of NBA players before them had for Larry and Magic. And as MJ expanded upon the international exposure that began with Larry and Magic so to did Magic and Larry grow the love domestically for the game that was started with players like the Big O, Wilt, West, Russell, Cousy, and so one.

There shouldn't be a league-wide retirement of any number in the NBA, period.

No #23, no #6, no #33, whatever.

Jackie Robinson's contribution to sport and society went well beyond what occurred on the field and let's face it, the implications were much greater than anything Jordan or anyone else did.

I agree.  And honestly, I am sure Lebron would agree if you gave him truth serum.  But its a great publicity stunt.

By the way, does anyone else see the irony of Lebron saying 2 days ago, that he will not talk about next year again until the season is over.  And then yesterday starts talking about what number he will be wearing NEXT YEAR.  I know its not the same thing, but its just kind of ironic.

my thoughts when i heard this
Um ex-squeeze me? Baking powder? Lebron James says Micheal Jordan's number is just so precious, but he wants to switch to NUMBER 6? Ever heard of this guy?
This man is so in love with himself and has such a giant lack of general history and etiquette that he should just do himself and his sponsors a favor and keep his mouth shut in public.
This quote makes him sound like a narcissistic airhead.
What a complete idiot.  I was glad to see that Jalen Rose called him out on this on SportsCenter.  Rose sounded shocked at LeCrab's ignorance, but I don't think it's really that shocking.
I think this is little to do with the jersey numbers and more to do with James' ego and his feelings being bruised. He wore 23 in honor of MJ but Wade has a new contract with MJ to promote his sneakers.

Am I the only one who thinks that Riley retired the number to give something DWade to shoot for?

Maybe he intends on becoming a Shot-Blocking, Rebounding, Defensive Stalwart that makes his teammates better.

Maybe he intends on winning 11 Rings, as well.

Whether or not Lebron meant it as disrespect…who knows? He still has his whole career in front of him to determine what effect he will have on his teammates, and thus far I would say the jury is still out.

He has yet to elevate his teammates to Championship Land. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t.

We will all be a witness, I suppose ;D

Yeah that was a theory floated around at the time...Riley is a gamer, he'll do whatever he can to motivate players.

To be honest I don't have any objection to what Lebron has said. Jordan is the most recognisable player of all time, Consistantly seen as the greatest player of all time. He really did put basketball on the map, made it the International sucsess that it is today. I hate LeCrab's ego as much as the next man, but I do like the idea.

No disrespect to Russell whatsoever of course.

OK let's be honest here.

First of all, I've read about 100 different reader comments on this topic on various sites.  Rough estimate 80% disagree with LeBron's statements, that tells you something right there.

Secondly, LeBron thinks he is better than other NBA players.  Now celebrities thinking they are better than average citizens is one thing, famous people and athletes thinking they are better than the public is another thing. LeBron James thinks he is better than his own colleagues on a personal level, not just about statistics and who averages what.

"There would be no LeBron James, no Kobe Bryant, no Dwyane Wade, you name all the best players in the league right now and the last 10 years, there would be none of us without Michael Jordan."---This comment right here is just flat out stupidity.  So if Jordan never came along basketball would be completely non existent, all basketballs would have been destroyed and nobody would have ever taken a shot again.    Total nonsense.  What about Adam and Eve, is he going to thank them too?

Now LeBron is the superstar of the era, but I really wish he would get his game right.  And I'm not talking about his basketball game.  The game of life. It seems like he wants to go out of his way to make all these rebel statements about what should take place in the NBA, like its 1969-1971 with Bill Walton and Muhammad Ali and people in Vietnam and protesting and Woodstock.  Sorry LeBron wrong time period. Without food on your table, a roof over your head, caring parents, teachers, coaches, hospitals, communitites, families, friends, good samaratians etc., there is no basketball.     Basketball is secondary to the game of life.  Just look at the great story coming out about Michael Oher who plays for the Baltimore Ravens. He was homeless until the age of 16, and if some nice family didn't take him in and take care of him he would have never made it to the NFL.

So LeBron if you want to make a statement, make it about life, not about basketball.  You can retire every #23 in the world, put Jordan on the biggest golden pedastal by honoring him and praising him and worshiping him every day of the week.   It isn't going to help our economy, it isn't going to create jobs, its not going to put food on people's tables, it isn't going to put kids through school.  With all the rules and laws about stuff this guy wants to throw out and tell people what they should do, and after the huge billion dollar contract he's going to sign, if he doesn't give 23 million away to charity and the homeless and poor kids and families throughout the country, for every 25 million he makes, dude is a flat out phony.
Why? Because he seems to want to stand up for what is right and go out of his way to tell people how things are so why not follow through and put your money where your mouth is. If you are going to talk about how you are God, follow through and make the effort to be just that. Don't sit here and tell people how they should feel about Michael Jordan when you have 500 times the average salary of an average American.  This guy has the ability to put thousands and thousands of kids through school.

Sign with New York, put the deal at $280 Million.  Go to the bank, cash 80% of it out, and hand it out to all the fans going to stadiums around the NBA, and hand it out in the projects, trailer parks, to people with disabilities, and to charities around the country.   Make your country and the people around you better by doing something that matters, not telling people how high on the wall they should paste their Michael Jordan poster.

And you may say it is his money he can do whatever he wants with it.  That is true.  However it seems like he wants to make a bold statement about all these things in the NBA, so if he really wants to make a bold statement, make it about life, because it preceeds basketball.

Then you may also say well these multi-millionaires like LeBron do enough for the community.   Well if you have all these George Clooney's, Will Smith's, Jay-Z's, ****' etc making bilions and billions of dollars why is the country in a recession, and why does half the country struggle to get by paycheck to paycheck?  Because these people don't do percentage wise enough for the amount they earn.  Why are we in a recession anyway when you have all these Oprahs and Trumps and Bill Gates making billions and billions of dollars? Because percentage wise they don't give back the right amount for what they earn.
So if LeBron really wants to make a statement, don't make it about basketball, make it about life.   And if your not going to make a statement about life, don't be making statements about basketball.   Because without the Tuohys(Not the Michael Jordan's) of the world, there wouldn't be any LeBron James's.

Its really whatever i mean i will be the first one to argue that Bill Russell is top 5 players all time in NBA's history but in no way is he better the Mike and you have to realize the time we are in, in which NBA players now grew up watching MJ not Bill. I am only 19 but i would have to say i wouldn't argue a league wide retirement of the number 23 i believe they do it in baseball for Jackie Robinson where of course it was a bigger deal but, the only reason people ever wear 23 is to think they are like mike but they just wont be. LeBron is the closest to being like Mike and wear his number. I have to say i am all for the idea of LeBron changing his number. Actually going to make his own mark and make people want to be like LeBron not like mike, And the reason why he is going to wear 6 is because its what he wore in the Olympics. Well anyways maybe he will come hear and wear the number 8! Here is to wishing!

Kid, Bill Russell isn't just a "top 5" player, as you put it. He is number one. He played 13 seasons, and is responsible for 11 NBA championships. Yes, he had great team mates, but he was the mvp of each of those teams.  He was the ultimate winner.  No one comes close in that category, which is why we play the games.  I forgive you because you are young, but you need to learn your NBA history more, starting with the Celtics.
