Seems like Mayo has a sprained MCL.  He'll be out a few games, but not the whole season.  Here's hoping he comes back healthy ASAP.

They said on channel 7 last night that he told a teamate it was no big deal.  Im hoping he will be back sooner rather than later, but the good thing about having a young defense is that they probably should get better every week so maybe that can mask Mayo not being in a little bit.

No they cant.  Guyton looked lost in the middle on screens, draws, and just about anything involving MLB instincts.

If this team is without Mayo (who by the way is the play caller for the defense) for any extended period of time, the defense is in trouble (notice I said defense only, I still think the offense will put up a ton of points).  I would hope that if he is out for 6-8 weeks they move Adalius back inside (where he is less effective, but more effective than guyton).

I can honestly say, I expect Leon Washington to cut us up on Sunday without Mayo in the game.

Well, at least its not a tear.  6-8 weeks is a lot better than missing the entire season.

Monday night was not a good night for the linebacking corps after Mayo went out.  Its definitely reason for concern if Mayo is out for 2 months.  This schedule isn't a cakewalk this season.  They're gonna face some pretty decent teams in the timespan that Mayo will supposedly be out (Jets, Falcons, Ravens, and Titans to name four).  The linebacking corps is going to need to step up bigtime against those teams.  They were burnt far too often the other night on the screens, short passes, etc.  Their inability to get some key stops kept the Bills offense on the field and the ball away from the Pats offense. That can't happen.

Ok well I think it is foolish to say this Defense cant get better considering you have a healthy secondary that is just starting to play together.  As well as a good deal of young players playing key roles.  I expect them to be better than they were last week.  And lets not forget, while washington is a threat I would take my chance at having Cotchery beat us instead of Evans and Owens.  Bill will be able to bring the safties up and will be much more flexible with the secondary both in stoping the running game and the screen game.

However, I definitly Do agree that moving Thomas back to the inside is probably a good idea.

When you're contending for a title you don't want to count on a unit learning how to play in the NFL on the fly. Its hard enought for veteran's to mesh and become a strong unit.

Mayo needs to come back healthy for the stretch if the Pats are going to make a run.

Agreed, I was just commenting that luckily things are probably going to get better.  They always say the best teams make their biggest stride between games 1 and 2.  I certainly expect to see that for our offense and hope to for our defense. But in all honesty this jet team doesnt scare me too much.

As for Guyton looking lost when put inside, I seriously doubt he got any reps this entire camp and pre-season playing inside on the 4-3 and calling the signals. Give him time and he won't looked nearly as lost on some plays as he did Monday night. It's a completely different view and set of responsibilities. After spending months determining how to properly read things from the outside it will take an adjustment to get what needs to be almost down naturely to the point where he can just see and react without thinking.

The minimum amount of time he will likely miss is between 6-8 weeks, and a source close to Mayo admitted that he appears to have a long recovery ahead of him. A Grade III sprain represents a complete tear of the MCL as opposed to Grade I and Grade II, which are incomplete tears.

Great  ::)
