Quick reality check on Bruce Bowen.

Never a great player, not getting better; his 2008-09 season stats were terrible:
MIN - 18.9
PTS - 2.7
AST - 0.5
REB - 1.8
FG% - .422
3P% - .429
FT% - .538

PER - 5.37
On Court Offense - -9.2
On Court Defense - -3.3
Opponent PER, Small Forward - 13.7
Opponent PER, Small Forward - 13.5 (Udoka)
Opponent PER, Small Forward - 14.9 (Finley)

Big small forwards from the west perform better against San Antonio than their average:
Anthony - FG% +1.5
Jackson - FG% +5.4
Howard  - FG% +6.1
Durant - FG% +1.9
Half of the small forwards in the East are to big for Bowen: Lebron, Lewis, Turkoglu, Thadeus Young, Granger, Butler or Wallace

In the first section, we established that he is not good at offense. In the second section, we established that he is not a great defender. In the third section, we established that he cannot ease Pierce's defensive burden.

How does a 6'7", 200 pound, 38 year old scrub help this team?
"All I have to know is, he's my coach, and I follow his lead. He didn't have to say anything in here this week. We all knew what we had to do. He's a big part of our family, and we're like his extended family. And we did what good families do when one of their own is affected." - Teddy Bruschi

You say all this as if they're  better options out there that we can afford.

Theres no stat for defense, numbers can't show what a great defender does... you have to watch the games.

Plus he wasn't playing in front of the likes of KG/Perk/Sheed.

He's a good defender becuase he's smart, and he's a good defender because he takes pride in his defense.

Of course he's not getting better.  If he wasn't getting worse by the time he was 38 I'd think he wasn't human.  Still, he's a bigger asset to our team than most agents out there.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Even more so, he's a bigger asset than anybody we currently have on roster... for that role.

Uh the front line of Tim Duncan and anyone else is pretty [dang] good.

Bowen is old as dirt and probably done. Still I think he'd be a good asset to have as our 4th wing.

Duncan had no knees last year, plus they had no compliment big man to Duncan.

Tim Duncan was healthy for most of the first part of the year. Bowen still sucked.

bowen is a great option for the bench. I mean, who would you want instead of him that we can reasonably have a shot at getting? He's much, much better than having to bring TA, Giddens, or Walker into the game. Can Giddens and Walker get better? Yeah, sure, and they can also end up like Gerald Green and Pruitt, but we are not rebuilding, we are contending, therefore we need guys who know how to play d and win, and who are not playing for their first big payday, but instead for the glory of another title.

PJ had played extremely well for the Chicago Bulls the year before he joined the C's. Bowen on the other hand looked awful for San Antonio. I get your point, but I really think they have different amounts left in the tank.

Bowen was a solid 15 minute a night player for the Spurs last season. He can help a team.
