Darius Miles could not make this team last year and now you want them to go after a 38 year old player?  Go ahead and sign him.  He may not even make the cut.  A waste.

Darius Miles couldn't make the team bc he's a chump. He didn't know the first thing about team basketball, not to mention his whole demeanor and skillset.

I remember 2 38 year olds that might quite a contribution to the 08 title in Sam Cassell and PJ Brown. Just bc they are old does not mean that they can't play.

PJ BROWN WAS late 30's and he was fantastic for boston

Stats do not support the statement that PJ Brown was fantastic in 2007-8.
PJ Brown's 2007-8 stats:
Regular season:
Games: 18
MPG: 11
Points: 2.2
Rebounds: 3.8
Blocks: .4

Playoffs:
Games: 25
MPG: 13.6
Points: 2.9
Rebounds: 2.4
Blocks: .4

If not for a big game 7 against Cleveland, PJ would not be remembered as having given the C's all that much in 2007-8.  He was not a fantastic player, but he did make a key contribution when it mattered.  Bowen's 38 year old legs may not help him produce numbers that impress, but his 38-year old saavy, if he's healthy, could result in smart plays at key moments.

38 or not, the guy would help to contribute off the bench, even if only for 10-12 min a game.  nothing spectacular, just solid play. if we can sign him for real cheap and for 1 year, get it done!

Darius Miles didn't make the team for the same reason that we didn't keep Powe, because their legs are shot, they will never fully recover.

I posted the reality check for two reasons:

1) A lot of posts were out there claiming, in effect, that if we signed Bowen it was all over.

2) Because there are other options, and we should not put on the blinders.

If we are looking for scoring, he is flat out not our man.

If we are looking for defense, Udoka put up better +/- and oponent PER numbers at the same position for the same team.

If we are looking to give Pierce a break on the defensive end, he is not our man - small forwards in the East will eat him alive.

In other words, if Bowen cannot help in any real way, why do we want him over guys like Udoka, Carney, Wafer, Bogans, Mason, Szczerbiak, Giddens or Walker?
"All I have to know is, he's my coach, and I follow his lead. He didn't have to say anything in here this week. We all knew what we had to do. He's a big part of our family, and we're like his extended family. And we did what good families do when one of their own is affected." - Teddy Bruschi

Stay away from Bowen.

what 12th man that's currently available do you want over him that we have a realistic shot at getting for the minimum?

Spoken like a true basketball sith.  We are not expecting anything more than solid defense and to be at least a threat from the corner to help further spread the floor for the second unit for the 10-12 minutes he would be in there.

Seems better than TA and company last year that couldn't hold or extend a lead to save their lives.

The world outside San Antonio hates this guy!! Not a great risk though. :'(

And the world outside of Boston hates Pierce, KG, Perk, Rondo, and now Sheed.  He'd fit right in!

Normally I would want this guy (for spot minutes, and minimum money).  But it does make me wonder why SA isn't interested in bringing him back.  Bowen knows their system, knows their team, if he had anything left you'd think they'd try to bring him back.  Also SA is definitely a well run team and isn't known to make stupid personnel mistakes.  Makes me wonder what's up.  ???

This is the key here.  He is a 12th man (or maybe 10th man at best).  If you can fill that spot with a guy of Bowens experience and pedigree, then you have to do it.  He really is not going to see many minutes, unless there is an injury.  But if there is, you know you can count on him to at least know what he is doing, even if he is a step slow.

Why even spend time on the 12th man?  Cmon really now. We are talking about the 12th man.  Not the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th 10th or 11th but the 12th man.  I mean the 12th man.

Youth my friend, youth.

Sam Cassell contributed?  Huh?  What?  I think he had one good quarter of basketball in the playoffs.

I will ghive you PJ Brown did but he was a big.  We are talking about a wing player who is 38 and not a big.

Not many would agree with you about Powe on this site.  I see many people clamoring for his return my friend.

Amen brother.  I dont get the fans love for Bowen at all.  Have they watched this guy the last 3 years?

This IS NOT the same Bruce Bowen from the early 2000s.  Not even close.

You drafted Giddens and Walker for a reason.  Let them play!  I will say it again.  Look how Powe and Gomes developed with minutes.

U need to play the youth as the 4th wing.  Why have Bowen take minutes from either alker or Giddens.  Makes no sense!

why exactly do you need to play the youth for the 4th wing? So they can make selfish and boneheaded plays while they dream of a big contract? No thanks. We are playing for a championship, we are not trying to rebuild or raise the value of our draft picks.
Tony Allan is not a yuong player man.  So see vets make boneheaded plays too..  ;D
