Red Sox Trade Deadline 2009

ESPN's Peter Gammons reports that the Marlins "appear to be moving closer" to a Nick Johnson trade.  Last we heard, the Fish offered pitcher Ryan Tucker to the Nationals and asked Washington to pay part of Johnson's contract (he has $2MM remaining).  At the same time, Danny Knobler of CBSSports says the Marlins are growing frustrated with the trade talks and may move on.

Johnson, a free agent after the season, currently projects to fall short of Type B status, so it makes sense for the Nats to take what they can get.  At the same time it'd be big for the Marlins to put a .408 OBP player in front of Hanley Ramirez.

Marlins should trade for some fans.

I would imagine it would start with Anderson as the top prospect (and maybe they would take Laroche to play out the year, since Lars isn't ready yet), and then maybe a couple other guys like Reddick or Westmoreland, and then a pitching prospect like Masterson or Bowden.

Anderson, Laroche, Reddick, and Masterson would be a decent package I think.  Especially since Laroche may have a better chance of netting them a compensatory pick or 2, playing everyday in the NL (and of course he is known for having much better second halves).

It can change.  It will be based on the entire season, not the first half.  And it also takes into account which league they play in.

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports the Red Sox are still talking with the Padres about acquiring slugger Adrian Gonzalez.

Clay Buccholz, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson are all involved in the deal. The Padres are also asking for Ryan Westmoreland and Lars Anderson. It's a massive price, but the Red Sox knew what they were getting into when they first struck up discussions for the 27-year-old Gonzalez. I wouldnt wanna give up Lowrie or Westmoreland, maybe give up Kalish/Pimantel or something like that instead of those two because i cannot watch Nick Green as the everyday SS.

12:08pm: Yahoo's Tim Brown says it's a done deal, with the Twins sending Tyler Ladenorf to Oakland for Cabrera.

Cabrera, 34, is hitting .280/.318/.365 on the season in 448 plate appearances.  He has $1.75MM remaining on his contract, once you factor in a $250K bonus for being dealt.  Though he profiles as a Type A free agent after the season, Cabrera's agent wisely negotiated a clause disallowing his club to offer arbitration.  So, no draft picks for

Not at all, he plays in a AWFUL hitting park, with no protection in the lineup. He sees barely any good pitches to hit and dominates on the road, id bet he would hit .275 or so playing on the Red Sox. He has a .970 OPS on the road compared to .880 at home, thats a big difference.
