I think Danny should offer BBD a two year $5 million contract.
Agree.
+1
Baby will get enough minutes, and we definitly need the 4th quality big as insurance.
And who knows, he´s only 23, his value could be even higher after next year´s playoffs.
And what do you define as "enough minutes"? KG averaged 31 mpg last year (a career low), Perk averaged 30, and Wallace averaged 30. That's 91 mpg used up out of 96 possible minutes at the 4/5 spots. I really can't see them playing any of those players less than 28 mpg either, which would only leave 12 mpg for Baby. Come playoff time, I can't imagine that there will be any minutes (barring foul trouble) for a 4th guy.
I agree that Davis would be nice for depth, but unless there's an injury, I don't see him playing a big role here next year. And that's why I wouldn't be devastated gambling on Powe. He's arguably as good as Baby, and any downgrade he is, wouldn't be that big of deal in the whopping 5-10 mpg they'd play. Similarly, if we had to use someone else like Scal or a FA until Powe came back in those limited minutes, it wouldn't matter either.
1. You don´t give 90 minutes to three players. No NBA rotation works that way.
2. Rasheed is 35, KG will be 33 coming off injury, Perk has the shoulder issues. These guys will miss games due to injury (see Greg´s post), and I think that Doc would like to keep the minutes down for all three of them during the season and on back-to-backs.
3. The most important things are always the necessary ones. A 4th quality big is necessary and not a luxus. There´s a good chance that one of the first three will be injured for the playoffs, and I don´t want to rely on Scal to play 30 minutes.
There´s also a good chance that Perk or Rasheed get in foul trouble early in a playoff game, and who will play then?
Depending on how many games the first three bigs will miss, I could see him averaging 15-20 minutes per game.
Maybe. But you have to remember that KG's 31 mpg and Perk's 30 mpg included all the blow out games when they played less than that. So in reality, they probably played a few minutes more per game in games that mattered. So what's my point? My point is that in games that matter, those three players will probably play all but a few of those minutes. Counting blow outs, might Baby average 15+ mpg? Maybe. But who cares who is out there if it's a blow out?
I agree that depth is important with this older team. I also agree that I'd like to have Baby be that 4th guy. My only two points are these:
1) I wouldn't disparage ownership for not matching some MLE-type offer. While I'll grant you that he may get minutes in the regular season, the need for a 4th big man will be dramatically reduced in the playoffs when Perk/KG/Sheed will absolutely eat up all the minutes at the 4/5. I can't blame them for not wanting to pay nearly 6 million a year for what Leon Powe could probably do at 1/10 of the cost.
2) The regular season doesn't matter all that much. Even without KG for the last 25 games, this team still won 62 games. Even if they had Scal (or even Mikki Moore) as the the big, they'll still win north of 65 games. So again, given that fact, I can't critique the C's for not wanting to pay Baby 6 million a year.
But, if the C's can get him back at 2-3 million a year, I'd be all for it.
