Establish a max value your willing to sign BBD at (you said 3 so I will go with that) wait to see what another team offers and make the decision based on its value.  If it's more than the max, then do a sign and trade, if it's not then sign him.

You can only sign and trade if the other team agrees, and if the other team has cap space because of the CBA rules regarding S+T with players increasing in salary. So its not possible. A team with cap space wont send you players for no reason, unless it's Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. they dont want.

Continue to wait and see if another team will make an offer.  If it is reasonable, match it.  If not, work out a sign and trade.


If (and most likely when) he doesn't receive a offer, give him a reasonable 3 year offer greater then the qualifying offer.

As much as I like BBD and would love to keep him in our rotation, there is a cold hard fact here IMO. He is making a bad judgement call in believing he will get a 'big contract'. I dont blaming him for waiting to see how the market plays out, but he would have much more leverage if he accepted the Celtics Qualifying offer soon for just one year.

In the current market with the economy driving down the cap, teams clearing room for the supposed Lebron, Wade, Bosh sweepstakes next season, there just isnt a team willing to overpay for him. Next season the teams with all that cap room will be more likely to overpay or sign long term deals after they lose out in the sweepstakes.

Again, just my opinon but I think it is all about the timing and in this case it is looking poor. Loyalty this season to the Celtics organization would be worth more coin next season on the open market. There is also the possibility that Ray Allen is off the books or signed at a reduced rate that allows more ready cash.

I look for Rondo to make this same mistake in overestimating his value.

We need BBD on this team.  We need a quality big and we need a young star with room to improve.  We are only 3 moves away from locking this roster as the most stacked ever, and this is one of them.

I think with another decent year, one of the teams that doesn't land a top tier free agent will overpay for Rondo and then we will be screwed. I do not think a team would make the same mistake with Baby, but with Rondo, they would be getting a VERY good [proven] championship point guard (with the potential to improve)...

Offer him a relatively small two-year deal with an opt-out after one season.  Something more than the qualifying offer but less than what he wants. Maybe add a team option for a third year.  He gets more security than a one-year deal and another shot at free agency in the alleged 2010 bonanza year.

I really think they should just wait this out.  There's not a large market out there right now and the C's may be very pleasantly surprised about what they get him at. 

While it's not my money, I wouldn't blame the C's for not matching a contract much more than a few million dollars.  The simple facts are that KG, Perk, and Wallace are all going to play somewhere around 30 mpg.  There's only 96 mpg between the 2 4/5 positions.  While Baby would be nice for depth, he's not going to play much next year. 

And while I think it's a gamble to some degree, if Powe does recover, I don't think we'd be much worse off letting Scal be the 4th big man until Powe comes back. 

In my opinion, Davis coming back here may be the worst thing for him, particularly if it's only a 1-2 year deal.  Unless there's an injury, he's not going to play much and he's certainly not going to have the minutes to improve his value for next year or the year after.
