Here's the funny thing about summer league box scores, you can almost always tell by looking at them who the real, honest to goodness, NBA talent laden players are. Ryan Anderson had a great rookie season and judging from the stats he was probably the only NBA talent on the floor today.

Yeah, I don't think there's any question that Anderson has talent.  He dominated today.  To be fair, though, a couple of the Celtics players might have dominated more if the team had less talent.  I get the impression that Anderson is really the only player of note on that team.  We have Giddens Walker Pruitt and Karl who are all at least borderline rotation players.

Wow, is Robert Swift as impressive as that stat line makes him look?   ::)

I remember back in the Big Al summer league days where I actually new that player development there was critical.  Now, just some mild improvement from some of our guys like Walker satisfies me.

It's pretty sad for us when our team is so devoid of young prospects outside of the starting lineup that we have to try to be excited about Giddens and Walker potentially developing enough to justify more than a few minutes a game.

Anderson definitely was the best player on the floor, but big men who can run and shoot tend to do very well in summer league, as Donte Green or whatever his name showed last year.  The games are usually very up and down and opposing big men are usually too slow (Swift, Fazekas) or too small (J.R. Giddens was the 4 for much of the game) to stop them.

I'm pretty disappointed in Pruitt.  He's shown quickness in splitting pick and rolls and an ability to get to the rack, but he's shown little in the way of real pg skills.  He had a nice kickout to Karl and a good lead pass to Giddens, but overall he looks to much like a 2 playing the 1 out of necessity.

I liked Giddens.  He can't go left for crap and he's very hesitant with his jumper but he's big, strong and very active.  If he can just take a chill pill, work on his 3-pt shot and spend all his energy rebounding and playing physical defense I like his potential.

Or, isn't it great that our team is so talent-laiden that it's going to take a hell of a young player to crack the rotation.  It's a reality that when you are good you are less likely to get young talent in the draft -- this is a far better situation than the converse.

Well, we do have a very very good starting lineup so that's partially true.  But our bench isn't hugely talent-laden.  We have a combo guard who is worthy of, at most, 15 minutes a night and a PF / C who is worthy of 25-30 minutes a night.  Besides that, our bench is wide open.

There are plenty of minutes available for the young guys, but they've had a real hard time cracking the rotation.  However, I do agree that I'd much rather be very good and have a dearth of young bench talent than be very bad but have an excess of young, decent players with potential.

Swift had 4 blocked shots. I think that is really good in 20 minutes. Summer League, like most pickup type games, is about guard play. No one really knows the plays or has any chemistry with each other, so usually big men can't get the ball because the guards are controlling everything. In a half-court system, I think Swift would be an ok player.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

Giddens looks like he's putting up decent numbers.

eh.... no Fazekas.  I'd be okay with picking up Karl if we made some kind of trade involving TA or House.  As our bench currently stands there's no place for Karl.
