That wouldnt be enough for him IMO, i think a package of Masterson/Redick/Lars Anderson or Lars/Penny/Bowden/young, high upside type will be enough and id do it in a heartbeat. Halladay is locked up through next year and you get to keep Buchholz, its alot to give up but its a no brainer to me. Because the Sox farm system is so deep i bet they could do a deal like this without giving up Buchholz who i think the Sox look at as an untouchable..
I also think we'd have to take on one of their bigger contracts like Lyle Overbay who would actually be a real good fit here with his OBP and him being a 1B. Whenever Lowell gets back he gives you a good lefty off the bench.
I think in any trade for Halladay to the Sox Buchholz is going to be the guy coveted as being a long term cheap replacement for Halladay in Toronto. It's true they might also require some young positional players but my guess is Toronto wants young, cheap arms. Besides, I'm not sure Boston is willing to give up on the small amount of positional prospects they do have, even if Anderson is having a horrible year.
Buchholz, Masterson or Bard, Penny and maybe even a Bowden might have to go.
I dont really mind giving Bowden up, he is a mid rotation guy at best, he doesnt have the greatest stuff and even though he may be working on things in AAA, he is having a tough time this year. I also like Masterson but id be ok with giving him up, i think he is a ok starter and a good reliever, but not great at either one.
Lars or Redick would be tough to give up but you are getting back a dominant ace who eats innings, also its alot easier to sign good hitters in free agency than it is to get an ace. The Blue Jays are gonna trade Overbay and will need a 1B for the future, i also think Wells get traded and someone like REdick would be a nice get for them to be their future CF'er. Theyd obviously ask for Buchholz but i dont think he will be a dealbreaker, the Sox have so much talented depth in the minors they could give the best package to the Blue Jays without giving up Buchholz.
If the Sox would be willing to give up Clay i think a package of Clay/Redick/Masterson/low level guy would work. Since the Jays would only trade Roy if they decide they are out of it, theyd have no interest in Penny since he is older and a FA after this year. The only teams that would go after him are the ones who are looking for a boost for a playoff run this year, like the Phillies or Mets.
