Well, as much as I dislike bench Tony, Starter Tony always plays well. I don't understand it, he's been a legit starter since day one, but he can never come off the bench.

I know it won't happen, and everyone shuns it and it's too late in the season for experiments, but I might not mind seeing Ray come off the bench and see how that goes for a while.

i actually think that we could continue winning championships with
Rondo, TA, Pierce, KG, Perk. we may lose that outside scoring, but if Rondo can pick up his midrange shot enough to keep his drive honest we can make up for the rest due to TA's upgrade defensively over Ray. Plus we could have Ray as our babysitter in the second unit.

That time is a few years from now.

oh no doubt.

I think Tony is sometimes unpredictable but he is definitely good for this team. The problem is that it seems he doesn't really understand his role or that the team doesn't know it really. The other day they said they wanted Tony's defense, not his offense. I think he is really good at creating his own plays when the offense is stuck (like Leon) and he adds athleticism and energy. The problem comes when he tries to do to much. And also, he is extremely injury prone. If he manages to understand his role, avoid the injuries and play more he is definitely worth coming off the bench

Tony Allen is and always will be my favorite player.  He has swagger and his energy is awesome.  Look at the box score from Game 4 Finals last year.  Tony +10 in 2:14, it was the first time he played in the Finals and we were 10-0 with him on the court.

lol...thats cool and all, but that was purely coincidence that he was on the floor when that all happends, and he wasnt out there for long either....swagger? what kind of swagger? ive never noticed it.

Anyways, tony did play great last night, but that isnt going to happen consistently, he'll play equally as bad in no time...that and it meant less shots for eddie, which i dont know how i feel about

Also remember he was a starter last night. Tony has shown he plays better overall when he's starting or getting a lot of minutes. He's much more comfortable in that role.

Have none of you been watching TA for the past few years?! This is EXACTLY how TA is. About one game out of every 7-8 he looks like a legit NBA player that should be starting for someone. He is one of the better athletes out there on the floor, he just doesn't have the ball handling skills to be consistent. He doesn't have the BBALL IQ to be consistent. He refuses to play within his strengths, so after a game like last night he decides that he is the man and then reverts to bad TA because he forces things. If the guy would do what he has the skill set to do, he could be a very solid backup in this league, or even a starter on a lower tier team. He doesn't however, and anyone that thinks that after 281 career games and almost 5300 minutes of play over 4 years that he is going to suddenly get it is sadly mistaken. After year 1 he was one of my favorite players. I thought he would improve and get better. He has marginally gotten better in some areas, however he is the player he will always be. His stats across the board have basically stayed the same except for his outside shooting which has plummeted. For this team he should be playing a handful of minutes behind Ray and Eddie. If he goes out there and has one of his magic nights then Doc can give him a few more. If not he gets the quick hook.

No, Tony almost always plays well when he gets extended minutes.  But threads like this always bring out the haters.

Yet Marbury makes three absolutely dumb turnovers that almost cost the game and everyone says how well he played.  Sometimes I think I'm watching these games on a different planet.

I wonder if the Delonte West haters who used to post on this forum have gone over to the Cavs forums to dis him there.  They would have to be Celtics fans, because Cavs fans are probably too smart to rip a fundamentally sould player like West who hustles every minute and plays the right way.

Tony Allen is a steal at 2 million a year.  An absolute steal.

Tony isn't really what we need.

As a starter with extended minutes he's great, As a sub with limited minutes he stinks.

Unfortunately for Tony we already have a great starter at his position.

Until he starts stringing together a bunch of solid to good games coming off the bench, my opinion of him does not change.

TA could make a lot of money in this league on lotto/barly making the playoff teams if he was allowed to start.  (think Wallace on Char)

At this point, Tony Allen is what he is....and that is an incredibly inconsistent player who has the ability to play excellent defense for stretches, and explode offensively for stretches, and then fall asleep defensively for stretches, and implode offensively.  In between he is an uneven, if aggressive defender, and often invisible in a half court offense.

With that said, Tony is going to be an important player in the playoffs.  He is the only potential defensive weapon we have off the bench, and if used with a quick hook when his mind starts wandering can do good things.

TA is a good role player for the Celtics if he plays within himself the entire time he's on the floor. He gets into trouble when he tries to do to much. He can really play well when he keeps it simple. Big Beast has the same problem, but has done a great job of overcoming it quickly.(He still has problems at times). Maybe TA's injuries have prevented him from learning.

I think last nights game pretty much sums up Tony. He played pretty well early on, than started trying to do too much and looked awful, than played well at the end. Inconsistant is the word I'm talking about. If he would just not try handle the ball so much, he could be fine, but there was one play he got the ball and started heading up court with it, I knew it would turn into a turnover, and it did.
Also, and I really would like other's opinion, is his defense not over rated? I watched him get beaten on many occations last night. AI blew around him a few times. I just wondering if anyones elses thinks he's not the great man on man defend he's given credit for.

I agree with you completely on this.  Frankly, I am happy to have him back -- he provides depth, flexibility, and dare I say it--- experience.

Hes still Tony Allen

still run the floor on defense
still try to catch the mid pass with some succes
still usually defends good to anyone but bron and kobe
still drives with head down
still dribles too much
still miss stupid easy baskets for not passing the ball
still makes stupid passes
still complains to himself ala gerald green
Still is a decent scorer off the bench

still Tony

`p.s. Chris was a little ahead of me in this one.

but i disagree in the only offensive weapon
Marbury, House and BBD can carry a lot of weight by themselves
and Marbury can create his own
Once a CrotorNat always a CROTORNAT  2 times CB draft Champion 2009-2012

Nice to be back!

His defense is absolutely overrated.  He has the ability to be a great defender, but he has way too many mental lapses.

I would put him in the same category as Rondo.  They are both defensive playmakers, who have the ability to change the game with defensive plays, but are not true shut down defenders, and can be beaten if you know how.
