Would he serve a purpose in Boston?

no.  with his shoulder issues, he would probably have to play DH.  We already have one.

Sheff is a far cry from what he once was

Where are you gonna put him?  If Drew shows some resemblance of health, the Sox are set in the OF.  They have Baldelli as a backup.  Also, the Sox have no need for a DH.

Also, the idea of Sheff patrolling the vast right field of Fenway is a scary thought.

only if he was non-crazy and could accept that he's a 4th outfielder/DH for when papi needs a break on this team, and won't see alot of time.

Sheff's ego will not let him accept that.

We are kidding ourselves if we think Drew's health is going to hold (It's not a contract year).  Baldelli's ability to play day in day out is questionable at best and Kotsay is injured.

The Sox are hurting (no pun intended) in the outfield.  I am on record for saying that the Sox will miss Coco this year.  That being said, Sheffield is not the guy.
Call me a sap, but I love my kids more than anything!

I love Sheffield.  I know it's probably unrealistic, and is completely superfluous, but I'd sign him as a fifth outfielder / backup DH.  Drew, Baldelli, and Papi all have health issues, so this would provide some potential insurance.  Granted, Sheffield is banged up, and he never may be an impact player again, but I'd take the gamble.  When healthy, the guy can rake like few players in the game.

he hasnt been good since 2005.

last year he hit .225

if he could still play the outfield then maybe maybe - but since he is solely a dh at this point in his career he doesnt offer much.

also, i seriously doubt he would be on board with being a 5th outfielder.

Exactly.  Even if he good enough to be a nice backup I'm sure thats not the role he's looking for.  If you read some of his quotes from last year, the guy still thinks he's an allstar player.  He blamed his poor production on playing time, then when he finally played a few consecutive games he had to go on the DL.

He was fine in 2008.  25 HRs, a .378 OBP, and a 120 OPS+ are all pretty decent numbers, especially when playing in a pitchers' park.

I agree that he's more of a DH at this stage of his career, and it's doubtful that he'd sign here (unless his motivation was to screw the Yankees).  However, I don't think the guy is as cooked as some are suggesting.

that was 2007.  and yea those numbers are ok, but it was 500 at bats.  how many would he get as a 4th or 5th of here?  200?  150?  batting average in 07 was 265.  225 last year.  what are we looking at in small playing time?  I just dont think he is a fit.

I am obvoiusly harder on him than you, but I think he would be a miserable fit here, and maybe in the perfect situation he can get himself back a bit - I just dont see it.
