yup. Marbury has everything to gain by performing well off the bench. The Celtics have just added a lighting rod to the team. This is gonna be fun.

And if he doesn't fit, they just cut him. no big deal.

I think people are underestimating Steph's desire to get paid. He needs to play well to get a good contract, or one at all, next season. I think that'll motivate him more than anything else.

TP,  this is the number one factor in him playing the choir boy for 4 months.

to qoute Major league, when dorne was causing trouble in the locker room and not playing well-

"hey (whatever assistant he asks), can you tell me the value of a 3rd baseman who doesn't help his team win, and doesn't give effort to the point where his coach benches him for the rest of the year compared to a guy who puts up good numbers?"

Steph may be crazy, but steph understands $$$$. and the market value of a good 6th man on a championship team is slightly more than a guy who gets cut/benched from two teams in one year for causing trouble off the court.

Also, he has the added incentive of ditching the "washed up crazy person the knicks cant even use" tag and making them look silly for not playing him off the bench.

Maybe.  On the other hand, Marbury was stubborn enough not to play when the Knicks offered him the chance, which would have given him a chance to rebuild some of his value.  That move cost him, and he didn't care.

As I said elsewhere, I think we need to quit applying rationale decision-making to Stephon Marbury.  He doesn't think like a normal person.

If he is like Rodman, the sideline photographers and videographers had better start wearing cups.   :o

Yes!  Steph and I both stepped on Georgia Tech's campus in the same class, and because of that I've followed his career pretty closely (heck, I followed the Wolves initially because of Steph, that's how I became a KG fan).  And Roy nails it on the head: he doesn't think like a normal person.

For one, he's just an odd guy...he's kind of a goof.  But on the court, Steph has always struck me as using basketball as a means to an end.  He wanted his family out of the projects, and he wanted to live well.  Basketball has provided that for him.  Basketball also gave him a medium in which to try to prove that he is the best, which is important because he's an individually competitive guy.

These are key, because it gives an insight into his thought process.  Some folks are driven to win a title...Steph has never seemed driven by that.  He'd LIKE to win a title, but the money and his view that he was at the top of the totem pole were always MORE important.  As such, I don't think he feels like he has to prove he can win a title.  And I worry that he won't feel the need to try to fit in because he still sees himself as the best.  He has been in the league longer than Pierce, was drafted ahead of Allen, and already blew up a Minnesota team for jealousy of KG so I don't see him feeling the need to defer to them.

If he does officially join the Celtics I will hope for the best, because Steph really does have the ability to be a great boon to the team.  He is all of the ball-handler under pressure that neither House nor Cassell were last season, he can definitely provide enough offense to the second unit for it to get by even while GPA rest, and he has in the past shown that he can personally make hustle/role player big men into offensive threats using the drive and kick (could be great for Powe, Moore and Baby).  But I worry...and just have to hope that either my assessment was wrong or that he is more motivated now for that title than I credit him for.

In that particular situation, I put a lot of blame on the Knicks organization on the way they handled Marbury this particular season. I really can't blame Marbury much for refusing to play when they asked him to given the circumstances. I probably would've done the same if they had treated me this way specifically this season.

With D'Antoni in place, they could've handled the Marbury situation infinitely better this season. They really dropped the ball.

But other than my opinion on this matter, no one can really tell what's going inside his head.

I personally am a fan of the move.  I think its going to blow a breath of fresh air into the team. Someone else mentioned how you could have Garnett, Pierce & Allen on the bench and have Marbury as the main guy in the second unit.  He definitely adds a legit backup PG, as well as some other dimensions to the team.  If it works out, it will definitely be a great move. If not, they'll cut him.

Bucknersrevenge,

Those are the most manipulated stats I have ever seen.  I am sure that the Suns improved record had NOTHING to do with signing Nash and other upgrades.  I am sure that bringing in D'Antoni and a lot of better players had NOTHING to do with the Knicks' improved record.  I am not sure of the Nets' moves, but am sure that those moves had a LOT to do with their improvement.  To imply that just getting rid of Stephon led to these improvements is asinine.

Smitty77

Sorry Bucknersrevenge, but THIS was the post of the thread. What a bunch of misleading hogwash those stats were without any mention of who he was replaced with and other additions that they made.

If you are looking for Marbury to be the cornerstone of your team then you will be disappointed. That is a factual statement. If you are looking at him to be a great change of pace backup PG that can flat out score on anyone then Marbury fits that bill. His only downside is that he is a headcase. He does however care what people think about him and realize this is likely his final chance. He will come in and be the perfect soldier and help us out a great deal because he HAS to. We need the offense and the downside is small. If he acts up we cut him.
