As I said elsewhere, I think we need to quit applying rationale decision-making to Stephon Marbury. He doesn't think like a normal person.
Yes! Steph and I both stepped on Georgia Tech's campus in the same class, and because of that I've followed his career pretty closely (heck, I followed the Wolves initially because of Steph, that's how I became a KG fan). And Roy nails it on the head: he doesn't think like a normal person.
For one, he's just an odd guy...he's kind of a goof. But on the court, Steph has always struck me as using basketball as a means to an end. He wanted his family out of the projects, and he wanted to live well. Basketball has provided that for him. Basketball also gave him a medium in which to try to prove that he is the best, which is important because he's an individually competitive guy.
These are key, because it gives an insight into his thought process. Some folks are driven to win a title...Steph has never seemed driven by that. He'd LIKE to win a title, but the money and his view that he was at the top of the totem pole were always MORE important. As such, I don't think he feels like he has to prove he can win a title. And I worry that he won't feel the need to try to fit in because he still sees himself as the best. He has been in the league longer than Pierce, was drafted ahead of Allen, and already blew up a Minnesota team for jealousy of KG so I don't see him feeling the need to defer to them.
If he does officially join the Celtics I will hope for the best, because Steph really does have the ability to be a great boon to the team. He is all of the ball-handler under pressure that neither House nor Cassell were last season, he can definitely provide enough offense to the second unit for it to get by even while GPA rest, and he has in the past shown that he can personally make hustle/role player big men into offensive threats using the drive and kick (could be great for Powe, Moore and Baby). But I worry...and just have to hope that either my assessment was wrong or that he is more motivated now for that title than I credit him for.
