Lots of posts on this one!  Moore is a good pickup even if Smith does come available.  If I can remember all I read on this one:
Moore is a hard playing backup, not a project like Obryant (soft?) or soft with a bad attitude like blount  :-X
He can hit the outside shot and to me the most important this is as a long big he is athletic enough to cover Toms rotations.  Mutumbo, I love but no way could he have come to the c's and helped on our defensive rotations.  Gotta be athletic with good foot speed (and be younger than 50!)
We have signed Moore to a nice contract, he's young enough that we can get more than a 1/2 season from him if we want.  PJ did a great job, great career, true professional.  He wasn't perfect (which moore & smith wouldn't be either).
If Moore brings the energy that I'm used to seeing from him with his length and can hit the outside shot its a GREAT signing.  If he boxes out his own man then I don't care if he averages 3 rbs a game.
Can Moore give us 15 minutes a game and help?  yes
Come playoff time..can he guard opposing bigs for a bit (z) , give us some fouls off the bench and hit the outside shot.  i hope so  :-\
I liken his signing to what we need in help for a series win, z is too tall for baby/powe combo.  If he does a good job against z then i'll be happy.
Also final thought..who will he be on the floor with for a pf?  Powe's low post game goes nicely with moore's jumper huh?

Can't say I love the signing but we needed more length off the bench and a legit back-up center. Moore gives us that.

I'm with those who are in the #1 fan camp.

Most fans in this board also like the POB signing because:

- he was a 7ft (who would play better with a change of scenario, like some are expecting Moore to do)

- he was cheap, so a low risk/high reward signing.

That's okay and it's the same way that most people are seeing this signing - better to have him than nothing (myself included).

The problem is that it would be nice to add some quality players to the bench at some point. Moore is not that. He adds depth, but he doesn't replace Posey or PJ Brown in terms of quality.

I find it quite interesting that you and many other posters find no value in the signing, yet our 3 chief rivals - LAL/SA/CLE all made offers immediately to the same player...this wasn't a baseball bidding war, the price was low...the fact that they all went after him tells me that he has value that this board isn't seeing...

Nice Addition!

I for one think this is exactly the type of defensive minded backup center we need.  Joe Smith may be a more accomplished player, but he doesn't fit the role we need on this team as well as Moore does.  Smith is more of a perimeter PF.

Mikki has length, he has playoff experience guarding centers, he can hit the 12' jumpshot, and by all accounts he plays very hard.  That's about as good as you can hope for, imho.

When you think about it, everyone in the league needs depth up front, you can't expect to fill out the roster with starter caliber players...

but all those teams have solid benches already...the Cs do not....

those teams would be signing Mikki to be a 10th-11th man (which would be a fine signing)

like i said, those teams would be signing Mikki for the end of their bench.

we're looking for a key reserve that we can lean on in the playoffs.

Now walker needs some burn to see if he can help us a sf.  With (if its a done deal) moore signed we have:
perk-moore-kg - davis for centers
kg-powe-davis(order of those 2?)-scal for pf
pierce-scal (unproven walker, injured and short ta) sf  *** this is our big ? now
ray allen-house-pp-ta injured-pruitt-walker/giddens unproved sg
rondo-house-pruitt pg
I am happy with this team.  We have lots of fouls to give up front and keep perk on the court long enough to guard the BIG bigs.  I also like ray allen bringing the ball up the court if house can't do it.  And once playoff times comes around, giddens walker pruitt and scal probably won't see much time if any.

I for one think this is exactly the type of defensive minded backup center we need.

Moore isn't a defensive minded center, though.  He blocks shots at lower rate than Brian Scalabrine, and allows opposing centers to shoot 60.9% against him.  Last season, he led the entire NBA in personal fouls.  He's a poor defender, much worse than Smith.

Mikki has length, he has playoff experience guarding centers...

What playoff centers has he guarded?  He's only been in the playoffs twice, and he matched up against P.J. Brown (and got swept), Andrea Bargnani, and Big Z (and lost that series).  It's not like he has a stellar track record.

I will agree that Moore plays hard.  He definitely does that.  However, he's just not that talented, especially on defense.  (Offensively, at least he's very efficient.)

also we have a pretty tricky defense to pick up....how happy are we going to be if Moore is blowing rotations for easy buckets..

remember, the difference in a lot of these playoff series is one or two plays....

Pretty amazing that you say that I "find no value in the signing" when I've said multiple times that I think this signing makes us a better team.

Just skimmed through some of the posts and I find it hard to believe some guys don't like the move and would rather have a 100 year old Motumbo.
Moore is just going to be a ninth or tenth man(at least I hope so), so let's not get all worked up here!
At least he can play a little and isn't over the hill.

I hope so. But why should we expect that? The man has been a sieve all his career and suddenly he becomes a good defender?

Moore's problem was never lack of effort or hustle. Just lack of talent.

Blasphemous crownsy!  Using that phrase in any post that does not prominently feature the phrases "Big Game" and "James Posey."

And I thought I knew you (as a poster, anyway).   ;)
