If the rumors are true and Danny has been trying to unload Giddens to any and all takers then he really messed up with that pick.

If he had picked up Chalmers or even Chris Douglas Roberts he would have been able to parlay that into another pick by now.

I am one of Danny Ainge's biggest apologists, however that move defied logic. No draft boards had Giddens slated to go that high.

Thank god we were able to buy the rights to Walker otherwise it would have been an awful draft.

Agreed.  I think Danny was screwed when San Antonio took George Hill, who was reportedly his pick.  Danny doesn't seem enamored with Giddens, if any of the reports of him trying to dump him are accurate.

First of all, he is trying to trade the last pick in the first round for a future first rounder.  I am not surprised no one is biting.

Secondly, I don't think its a slam dunk that Chalmers, or anyone else would have more value at this point.  While Chalmers has been decent in Miami, I have a feeling he wouldn't have cracked the rotation here....and I am not convinced he is a better player than Pruitt.  And CDR...well, he just isn't very good either.

I wanted Chalmers too. (I'm a life-long Jayhawks fan) But his mindset last draft is understandable. Giddens has a lot of upside, and has potential to be an above average defender with high offensive capabilities.

Chalmers is a great player, and has a ton of tools, but it seems that he may have reached his peak. He's playing good now, but that's because he was already a good college player that did well because of fundamentals. Giddens is a raw player that still excelled in college because of his athleticism. If you add fundamentals to that, and teach him a team game, you never know what his ceiling could be.

That's Ainge's biggest dilemma. JR & POB are pretty much useless while occupying two roster spots. Doc might as well play them so can they learn instead of being sitting ducks.

Thats the first time I have heard that Dany was intrested in George Hill. Does make some sense though.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
i'd rather screw up a pick that late than a pick in the teens...

remember, danny was able to eventually flip gerald as a part of a package deal.

i don't think this is so much about Giddens as it is that other GM's are going to start treating Danny the way Red was treated...when you become successful, they're just aren't that many people lining up to help you.  truthfully, Danny has nothing to offer so there's no real incentive for anyone to step up to the plate and get him out of his self-created predicament.

Well, I'm convinced that Chalmers is better than Pruitt.  I was very surprised that DA passed him up. Reminds me a lot of Rondo.

lets give it a bit more time.  it's too early to judge any of his picks from last year.

edit: obviously if he moves him for a second round pick then that is different, but I dont buy any reports that he is trying to give him away.

personally, what i think is happening is that Danny drafted two SGs and appears to like Waker better than JR...

And now that the playoffs are approaching, the real crunch is for open roster spots. So the logic is to try and move the player you are less enamored of to free up a spot...

doesn't really IMO say anything about whether JR is a bust or not...we just need roster spots to shore up for the playoff run (of which JR, this year, is clearly not going to be a part).

I still say it is too early to tell.

EDIT: Remember, many people said the same thing about Rondo, Big Al.  Not saying Giddens will be as good, but have some patience!

Wow, and it's so easy to be able to tell that he messed up that draft pick because we've seen him play so many minutes...

Danny doesn't tell Doc who to play.

It's hilarious how much crap the best GM in the league gets....HILARIOUS. And, no, this is not Austin Ainge.

i think its too early to make that claim.  when we had the pick and we were up, i wanted chalmers.  but i can understand taking a risk with a player late in the first round or second round, especially coming off a championship season.  i will wait and see if giddens ever materializes into anything.

  • The good ole days.
I don't think so... and I hope they are patient with both Giddens and Walker.  Eventually this team is going to need legit replacements for Ray Allen and Paul Pierce (as well as that big guy that wears #5) and Giddens/Walker seems to be about as good of a SG/SF combo as you can get in one draft with the last pick of the 1st and a 2nd rounder.

I think one point some are making here is not that the mistake is the JR is a bust as a player, but that he may have been a mistake in terms of our ability to use him to open up a roster spot or trade for something we need this year....

I agree that as a player it is way too early to know what he is going to know what he is going to do in the NBA....
