Its being reported 8-12 weeks right now, torn mcl
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3879472

Interesting, that would put his comeback sometime around the 1st/2nd rd of the playoffs.  Given his slow healing last year, his history of injuries and the huge extension, this means there's a good chance the Lakers will choose to hold him out for the rest of the season rather than risk reinjury and lost chemistry by working him in partway through the playoffs.

It's a shame, I'd rather see him play so we can beat them at full strength.  And any type of Sam Bowie situation is always a little sad.

Here is a release from the Los Angeles Lakers:

Results of an MRI on Andrew Bynum’s right knee showed a tear of the medial collateral ligament, it was announced today. Bynum, who suffered the injury early in the first quarter of Saturday’s victory over Memphis after having scored seven of the Lakers' first 13 points, will be out approximately 8-12 weeks.

The MRI was performed Sunday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and Bynum was examined this afternoon by Dr. David Altchek.

Bynum, who prior to the game against Memphis had averaged 26.2 points on 65.3 percent shooting, 13.8 rebounds and 3.20 blocked shots over his previous five games, ranks among league leaders in rebounds (19th/8.2), field goal percentage (8th/.558), blocked shots (6th /1.87) and double-doubles (17th/16). Named Western Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, January 19 through Sunday, January 25, Bynum is averaging 14.0 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.87 blocked shots in 46 games this season.

As much as I hate the lakers I really do like Bynum and I feel awful for him that a teammate ended his season against the Grizzlies two years in a row.

If its 8 weeks he comes back at the end of the regular season, then has to rehab. His season is effectively over.

Yep, he healed slow last season, and if he heals similarly this season, he's done.

Will the Lakers make a trade to bring in another big?

Well at first I was like, "nice!"...   I hate the Lakers and I hate Kobe and I hate their fans.   But I just watched the video and saw Kobe's face and for some reason I actually feel a little bad for them.  Not enough to lose sleep over it, but... wow... that really stinks for them.

And now even if we beat the Lakers this week they'll just keep up with the excuses.

I hear they're in talks with Toronto to trade Bosh for Sun Yue, DJ Mbenga, a 2nd rd draft pick, and the rights to Gasol's 8-year-old nephew  ;)

It would take a huge event for me to feel sorry for Kobe, but I agree the Lakers will definitely be throwing excuses if the Celts out play them.

I'll be curious to see the healing time.  people are pointing to slow healing last time, but that was a different knee and a significantly more serious injury.  this one isnt that serious.  I mean, sure it will take time to heal up, but a torn mcl is common when it comes to athletes.

I hear all this talk about people being upset because the Lakers have a built-in excuse.  Let's take a step back for a minute.  What's worse?  Being upset about the opponent having an excuse as to why they lost, or being the team with the devastating injury?

I would never wish injury on any player, but I'm not gonna lose sleep over an opponent losing a player to injury.  I'm just gonna be thankful it didn't happen to one of our players, and continue on with the season.

The excuses thing is lame.  Did the championship last year feel any less awesome because Andrew Bynum wasn't playing and the Faker fans gave that as an excuse as to why we beat them down?  Nope.  My shirts, flags, magazines, etc. all say "2008 NBA WORLD CHAMPIONS", not "2008 TEAM THAT BEAT THE LAKERS WITHOUT ANDREW BYNUM.".

It still counted as our 17th title, and it wasn't the first time we've beaten the Lakers in the Finals without them have a fully healthy team.  And the reverse has happened as well.  It happens all the time in sports.

He is not going to be able to come back from this and be very effective. The Lakers are done unless they can trade Odom and get something back... Its too bad cause I wanted the Celtics to bury them at full strength.
