I watched it on an HD DVR frame-by-frame.  He swings the arm like a punch, but his hand is open and the effect is a hard shove that mostly clips Rondo's chest.  Probably won't be enough to get him suspended.

True...but again, didnt a superstar in KG get suspended for "striking" bogut? and he never pushed anyone either? double standards if you ask me

My quick take:  I like that Perkins didn't try to instigate things more.  He just walked away.  That will save him a bit.  But I suspect at least a 1 game suspension.
Celtics fan for life.

This has been my point all along, but Ive been pretty misunderstood, and some people saying they were dissapointed in his actions afterwards got me scratching my head  :P

basketball has become too "wussified" for my taste...yes, i understand the idea of keeping things under control.

but i believe part of the problem is that the nba has become associated with violence that comes from the hip-hop culture...i don't want to say too much because i'll become branded and labeled and harrassed.

but think about hockey: they allow actual fighting in games and it's a necessary part of the sport.  if you don't follow and love hockey (of which i do) then you don't see this.

so why can one sport (basketball) get hyper-sensitive to a guy getting fouled hard, yet another sport (hockey) to protect the star players allow for fist-fights?  answer: it's the culture surrounding the people who play the game.

if that offends any of you i apologize and i'm not pushing prejudice or racism...it's a cultural issue and that cannot be denied.
Of course hockey is more thuggish and filled with goons. I have no interest in turning basketball into a lowest common denominator sport where they put players' heights and weights on the TV while 2 guys fight. I'm not sure how racism plays into this when hockey is the thuggish sport.

There might be a problem with hypocritical viewers who see fights among NBA players as a racial or cultural thing, while fighting in other sports is just part of sport. Clearly we have a problem with racist attitudes among viewers and this could be part of the reason for the sensitivity of league officials. It would be nice if there wasn't a double standard among sports viewers that associates fights in basketball as having a connection with "hip-hip" culture, while fighting in baseball and hockey is considered noble.

I know some people enjoy more violence in sports, but they can watch Boxing, MMA, and Hockey. I do not want to see a revival of 90s basketball with the Knicks and the Heat mauling each other for 48 minutes. That was horrible basketball. I would like to see basketball on the basketball court.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
apparently you haven't watched hockey in the last 3 years...it's not filled with thugs and goons anymore as hockey wants to go down the same path as basketball: more wide-open play on the ice, no more left wing trap, and no more holding players up.

but fighting IS part of the hockey culture and a necessary part.  when the refs break up a fight, it's over and the players are PENALIZED for their actions but not suspended and fined.

you may not know it, but hockey and basketball are much more alike today than years ago...but the culture is indeed different and one cannot help but see the idea of racism and hip-hop violence as a factor behind basketball's disciplinary decisions and not hockey's.

So if the Pistons won the game it would have been a bad play? The play had no effect on the game whatsoever, the only reason they got back in the game was because we let up and stopped moving the ball and they hit a few jumpshots. The pistons are a crappy jumpshooting team who doesn't share the ball with overated A.I. as their "star".

That list is interesting to me for the reason i never knew Kobe led the league with Tech.fouls last season.Seems the media,ESPN especially fails to make it a big deal when Kobe does things wrong on the court. If that had been Rasheed or Perk leading the league it is headline news...tp

Im tired of these little cry baby posters on here who feel sorry for guys who are making millions of dollars when they get hit, tackled, clotheslined etc. It is BASKETBALL! If you dont like being hit, play TENNIS or VOLLEYBALL!

Yes, this is basketball, just as you say - a sport in which "tackling" and "clotheslining" are prohibited at every level of play.

The people who don't have a desire to see that aren't the ones who need to find another sport.

I'm not disappointed in Perk in any way, at all, period. He didn't mean to do it, and he's not a goon at all. He's the man, plain and simple, and he was trying to prevent an easy basket in a close game. Looking at this play and saying its thuggish and disappointing... please. Just last friday my team was down 3 with 8 seconds left in the game, and we messed our press up and left a guy wide open downcourt. I had to sprint down and foul him, but he stopped short about 7 feet from the hoop, and so I ended up wrecking him. He slid into the wall beyond the baseline. It was a HARD foul. Harder than Perk's. But you know what? I didn't get a technical, or a flagrant, or even a warning. We just lined up for the one and one. There wasn't even any discussion on the foul, and the guy I fouled wasn't even bothered by the incident. Perk did absolutely nothing wrong, and to say that you're "disappointed" or "ashamed" of him is ridiculous. It was a moderately hard foul. Deal with it.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Plenty of hard contact plays develop when guys are going full speed, thats obvious an accident. Perk was calculated when he did this play so its a hard comparison to make.

You percieve it was calculated. Can you read Perks thoughts at that exact moment?

When I see a follow through like that on a foul I personally consider it a calculated blow. That obviously isn't good enough for a lot of the people here. In the future I will wear my green shades at all times.

Whatever. So if people don't agree with you obviously they are just homers.

Guess that would make you a hater then.  ::)
