My point is this, if the redsox really want texeira they need to ante up the offer slightly. (even if it is at 21 million per year)
If you keep raising your offer with the team that does it first , there is a higher chance that first team will sign that player
IF the amount figure offered by the sox are true, after the whole sabathia signing you would have thought the redsox would make a strong offer to tex, but it seems like they are playing a waiting game right now .
For me i would love teix personally but signing such high paying free agent will 1) mike lowell is still a really good 3b(i believe he will be back 100 percent next year) 2) signing texeira to even 20 million per year will make alot of redsox players unhappy since they feel he is not that much better than them(pedroia, youkilis as examples) and will be paid prob less than half of tex money per season
Ideally to take care of the offense issue, not sure what is happening with the catching free agent situation but if the sox can pull something big and get a guy like victor martinez that would kill two birds with one stone
The Sox will up their offer (if they even made a formal offer to begin with). The thing is, Theo knows how Boras works. He will sit there waiting for a team to blink...and then when they do, he will take that new high offer, and shop it to the other teams in the bidding to try to get a little extra. The Sox know they lose nothing by just sitting back and waiting for the call from Boras saying that he is ready to take an offer from X team, can you beat it? Boras is not going to freeze them out, because they are not raising the price right now, unnecessarily.
I have a feeling that as long as the issue is just money, the Sox will get Tex. However, if things like opt-outs and no trades become involved, the Sox will just walk away, and be happy that they have Lowell and Youk.
My guess is this is going to stay in a holding pattern for another few days, at which point, some team will blink and give them close to what Boras is looking for, and the Sox will then throw their bid in, which will likely be in the 8 years, $200 million range.
On another note, does anyone think Mark Mulder might be an interesting guy to pick up? He is coming off shoulder surgery, but he is only 31 (I believe), and his agent is claiming he will be ready for spring training (of course thats not a credible source). I think he would be a great candidate for a Colon-like "make good" contract where he can earn some money if he pitches, and is basically guaranteed a ML roster spot by a certain date, or else he will become a FA. It would add some nice depth to the pitching staff that never hurts.
