The C's have 16 players under contract (counting Miles's unguaranteed contract). So who will be cut?

I think the following are definitely safe: Rondo, R. Allen, Pierce, Garnett, Perk, House, T. Allen, Powe, Davis, O'Bryant.

The rookies are probably safe:
Walker because he has impressed the coaching staff.
Giddens because they drafted him for a reason and they want to see what he can do.

That leaves:
Pruitt and Cassell- The Herald said the C's are likely to keep 4 point guards (http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/basketball/celtics/view/2008_10_04_Working_on_point_system:_Celtics_making_grade/srvc=celtics&position=6), but I don't think we really need 4. I think one of these two will go if not Miles.

Miles-His contract isn't guaranteed, but I would like to keep him because of his versatility and length.

Scal- He's pretty clearly our worst player. But he is a veteran. And his contract may be valuable in a year. And if they cut him, his contract would still be on the books. He'd be my choice to cut, but I don't think Ainge will do it.

So, who do you think Ainge will cut? Not who you want to be cut, but who will be?

If there is a cut, Miles

If there is a trade, combination of Scali, Davis and/or Pruitt.

What can we get for those players?

Pretty much.  But, at this point, a second round pick might be better than having Scal. But is he even worth a draft pick to another team? He does have a contract that expires at a very convenient time. That's the only thing going for him, IMHO.

Another option would be to cut Sam off the players roster and keep him as an assistant coach. There he could still practice with the team and be available to activate onto the team if there's an injury or Pruitt isn't cutting it. That would get the team to 15, and I think that's what Danny would do unless a favorable trade arises early. If this does happen Danny will trade/cut at the deadline then activate Sam.

Pruitt and Giddens will still count against the 15 roster spots.

Isn't there a team under the cap that we can trade Pruitt to for a 2nd round pick?

Or even Big Baby?

If there was any justice in the world, it'd be Scal.

I think Pruitt is most likely the odd man out though, I like him but they can't really cut a big and we're overloaded at the 1.  For those who love Pruitt, it's not like we'd see him play meaningful minutes anyway.

Off the bench TA, House, Cassell, Powe, Baby, Patty O and Walker are the only guys who are going to play one way or the other IMO, the rest is just cartoons as they say.  Miles, Pruitt, Scal and even Giddens?  This year, you wont even know they're gone 8)

I don't know for sure, but this can't be legal :-\

Legal? Until the election at least, its still a free country. Sam has already acknowledge he's entered into a contract to play one more season and then become an assistant in Boston. If the C's cut him he's free to go play somewhere else or not he'd be a free agent!!!I would guess that this scenario was gone over before he was signed. It's not like they're trading him and if someone else wanted him they would have expressed interest before last week when he signed.

They did the same thing with Dana Barros a few years back.

Eh is that how it works.  Well contracts aside it would be scal & sam imo.  I think if OBryant shows he can play Davis might be traded with scal thrown in
-on the bubble will be pruitt and miles, can't see them cutting scal or sam or giddens who hasn't shown much but is our first round pick

Cassell should have been preemptively cut, as in not signed.  I still don't see the logic in that move.

Because House is a terrible Point Guard (not a terrible basketball player, terrible PG), and they can't count on Pruitt.  Plus, he brings veteran leadership that they lost with Posey and PJ.

I am not saying it was a great signing, but he definitely has his uses.

Oh yeah, and it doesn't hurt that up until he joined the C's last year, he was still a hell of a player, so there is plenty of reason to believe that last spring was an aberation.

If there is no trade, I would expect it to be either Pruitt or Miles, unfortunately.  It's obvious that Brian Scalabrine is the 16th best player on the roster right now, but he also has a contract that will be valuable to a team looking to get under the cap after next year.

And with our lack of size, I don't think it would be a good idea to cut Miles.  Versatility is key, and he would be able to defend a couple positions and give Doc some different looks.

In terms of Cassell, I was all for bringing him in last year, as were most of us.  But I didn't turn on him like many others (not saying that's a bad thing) after his less than stellar performance in the playoffs.  However, when I look at things right now, I think Gabe Pruitt would be more valuable to the team, now and in the future.  Sam can't play defense, and even though he's better than House in breaking a press because he has better handle, he's lost a couple steps, which makes him more vulnerable when teams are pressing.  Gabe obviously doesn't know the game as well as Sam, but he has the tools to be a lock-down defender at the point guard position, as well as a nice jump shot, great speed and good handle.  He belongs in this league, and I believe he's going to grow into a good player.  It would be a shame if it weren't here in Boston and we got nothing for him in return.
