When Danny said that he had been having conversations, and now knew the value of his players, that to me means Miles and Cassell are likely to stay, and there will likely be a trade.  Doc says we will likely keep Pruitt.  That his biggest fear is length. But Danny says we are no longer looking for a veteran Big.  They keep talking about Scal, perhaps being the end game shooter that spreads the floor.  Like it or not, the guys who are tradeable are Powe &/or Davis.  If you keep Miles, who can play the 4 or 3, he gives you both length and talent.  I think Danny might try to trade either Powe or Davis for a first round draft pic, next year.  We don't have any pics next year.

we need to keep D. Miles for the simple fact it will hamper portland. the beast of greg oden is lurking, hes beginning to wake up and anything we can do to hold them back is a win.

How does that help the Celtics?

In fact, it helps the Celtics if there are more good teams in the West such that it is a dog fight out there for playoff position.

I really don't know why there are so many down on Miles because I thought he looked really good out there as is, and he should improve.

Even though he isn't as slim or in shape as he used to (he should improve his conditioning as the season goes along), I really like the extra pounds on him. It makes him a more effective power forward, and he could be quite useful in small ball units.

His defensive rotations were quite good, his long arms bothered shots, he moved well without the ball, he played mistake free basketball. With better coaching, better positioning in offense, he can do some real damage out there. I really don't see how can anyone see a negative with what he showed last night. I mean, he got in front of the pack in a fast break, he can't be "that" slow... he got up for some jams (not as high as he used to), but he can't be "that" unathletic.

I'd like to see him rebounding better, but I think there are too many positives for a guy that just played his first game in about two years to really call his performance "mediocre" and such.

Miles and Walker are supposedly 6'9 and 6'6, respectively.  But I'm wondering what their actual heights are truly.  I'd also like to know their standing vertical reach and their highest jumping reach (there must be a common name for this, I just don't know it). The fact is, there are all sorts of things I'd like to know as a fan, but don't - but which I expect the Celtics coaches do know.

The point is, I like the idea of Miles making the team as a defensive specialist for guarding tall 3's, even though he hasn't been this in the past.  Still, in reality, he may not be much taller than Walker or the leaper, and his knee may be shot. I figure if the Celtics keep Miles, it's because his knee is sound enough, and he really can give them a genuinely long backup 3. (In which case, they'll make an assistant coach out of Cassell.)

easy answer; the celtics will roll through any team out west, so who cares if they beat up on each other. with that being said we can not do anything to those other teams financially, we can however limit Portland's bank roll. if we can, we should. Darius Miles is also going to be a nice player; its win - win.

Can he first play average defense in his career before we expect him to become a defensive specialist?

I fully agree, we don't know what kind of defense Miles is capable of right now, or after a full season of work under Coach Thibodeau. But I expect Thibodeau has a pretty good guess.

Based on all the opinions I have heard, a lot of people believe it will be Pruitt or Miles who is cut. A lot of people would like for Scal to be cut. There is a group who want Cassell to hang em up and join the coaching staff 'provisionally'. Finally, many would like to see a trade.

I think that what is best for the team is a trade. Our best tradeable assets (non starters) are Tony Allen, the rookies, Powe, Big Baby and Pruitt. Many would like to move Scalabrine, I dont see it happening.

My most likely scenario, if I am making a prediction, is a Davis, Powe or Pruitt trade attempt for future draft pick. I dont think there is a market for Tony Allen (let alone Scalabrine). I didnt see any teams beating down the door with offers and based on his salary, he didnt either.

Obviously we need a partner to make a trade. Without one, we cut someone. 8)

People are missing the point when they say there's no market for Scalabrine.  And it's pretty simple. Let's say there's a team with a veteran the Celtics want, and that team is willing to trade him for (say) Glen Davis. However, since Davis is on his rookie contract, they couldn't do the deal for the higher-priced vet. That's where Scalabrine comes in.  His contract and Davis's can make the contract money come out right. It doesn't matter if they've no actual interest in Scalabrine (they can cut him afterwards). By bringing in Scal, the deal gets done.

Tony Allen can't be traded now even if we had a trading partner.  He has a trade restriction.  After a free agent signs with a team he can't be traded for 3 months or until December 15th whichever is later.  The only exception is a sign and trade deal which I think there is something like a 72 hour window to get that done.  So our free agent signings right now Tony Allen, House, O'Bryant, and Miles can't be traded during the preseason just to let people know if your thinking trade ideas.

guava_wrench if you know so much, what is the answer then?   Why wouldn't they put Giddens in the D League to free up a roster spot?  They did it with Pruitt last season.

They can send Giddens to the D League, but it won't free up a spot.  There can only be 15 players total, 12 that dress, and the other 3 sit out, or, if eligible, can go to the D League.

You are absolutely right about Tony Allen not being tradeable until December, I overlooked that. I knew it about House and POB, but didnt consider Tony for some reason. I dont think it applies to Darius Miles because he is on a non-guaranteed contract. I could be wrong about that.

Thanks for the catch. TP4U 8)
