Unless there is a trade, this is the situation:

1. Scalabrine won't be cut
2. Giddens and Walker are rookies chosen in the draft by Ainge and we still haven't seen enough with these 3 games. There is no way Danny cuts them
3 It's a battle between Pruitt and Miles, which sucks cause i want both to make the team. Doc already said that whoever wasn't going to make the team COULD play...both Darius and Gabe can play basketball, but only one can make the team

I just WISH that we could make a trade to solve this situation. Otherwise I'd just love to waive Scalabrine, the least talented man on the whole roster. He is just a big body who plays decent team defense, that's all.

How about Cassell will be cut? This is the most likely right now.

I hadn't thought of that. But who convinces Sam to become an assistant coach this year instead of next one?

I wrote this on the game thread, but it probably suits this one better:

Very intense game, wasn't it? Didn't look like pre-season at all. I had fun watching it. At some point I thought Doc and Adelman could go get caught by the atmosphere and play the starters for 40 minutes and coach to win the game... I actually didn't, but it would be even more funny. Better than that, nobody get injured - for me, the most important thing in pre-season games.

Regarding the players performances and who gets the cut, I hate to play the contrarian and break the apparent consensus in this topic, but I have to call what I see. And that is a very, very, slow Miles. I understand he's not in game shape and I'm not an expert on these issues nor I know the details of his condition so I have no idea of how much room to improvement he still has. But if he's currently at 90%, not even 110% would be enough. When he's sliding, he looks like Eddy Curry or Adonal Foyle out there. Was Scal the one displaying this level of lateral quickness, and I'd be the first to say that we should make the financial effort and cut him if needed.

I agree with that, in that Miles is currently a bit slow. That's why I wanted to see him playing some PF as he currently is. I think that's his currently best position to be in. I think he's current strength would allow him to be quite effective there, as he's still quicker and more athletic than most in that position.

With that said, even with his slowness, he kept the people in front of him, and the people that went by him, he recovered fairly well and contested shots after shots. I don't remember him being scored on last night.

So, even though he's a step slow, no one has really capitalized on it and he's working around it well so far. But certainly, it's something that will need to be worked on.

Do you guys even realize that there's a great chance Cassell gets cut, as Pruitt is looking rock solid? And don't you tell me about the playoffs, by that time Pruitt will get the hang. Danny is not stupid. We're talking about 3rd string here, and if he wants Pruitt to develop, he has to give him minutes. If Danny/Doc wanted Pruitt to be 4th string behind Cassell, then he would be cut by now. So either we eat Scal's salary, or one of Cassell/Pruitt gets cut.

It's either Scal or Miles.

We don't know enough to decide at this point.

If Miles is healthy, if he can contribute by mid-year and if he buys in to the team concept and is a solid citizen, he might make the team.  It would be a rational economic decision to keep Miles if he is worth more this year and next year than Scal and the value of Scal's expiring contract.  A contributing Miles might be worth more than whichever player we might get with the extra money next year.

Either way, we're talking about the fifteenth guy, who will be in street clothes.  The only way Miles gets in is if Walker sits on occasion (which is likely).  They're looking at Miles at backup 3.  This is another reason why Scal may be in trouble.  Unless I'm mistaken, he's not a backup 3, and all the spots at 4 are taken.

At this point, BBD can do everything Scal can do and then some.  BBD can score around the basket and hit an open 12 footer.  Scal can't.  I know Scal started some games last year when KG went down.  This year, I think Davis would get the nod (to keep Leon in his usual role as first backup 4).

I wasn't impressed with BBD in games 1 and 2; but he came through last night.  I think he's solid as the fifth man up front.  If there's an injury, or foul trouble, or if Leon or POB aren't producing, then BBD gets some minutes.

So, either Scal or Miles, Sam and JR will probably be in street clothes.

I'd like to see JR and Bill Walker rotate in and out.  Both should get some time in D-League, and some time with the team.  Walker is needed more for backup 3, but Giddens may be the better defender.

The more interesting thing is what's developing at PG.  The 2nd unit is much better defensively with Gabe at the point.  I think the Celtics can play Tony and Eddie, or Tony and Bill; but I don't think they should ever play Eddie and Bill at the same time.  They lose too much on defense and ball handling.  This means that Rondo, Pruitt (or PP) should be on the floor at all times.

The second unit rotation to me looks like the following: Powe, POB, Tony, Bill or Eddie (not both), and Gabe.  BBD is eleven.  Either Bill or Eddie is twelve (on any given night - depends on the matchups).  Sometimes Miles or JR will sub for BW or if there's an injury.  Sam will play if Gabe can't do the job.  He's our insurance policy.

I realize Eddie and Bill play different positions.  If Eddie is in as the 2, Tony will play the 3.  If Bill is in at 3, Tony will play the 2.  Eddie and Tony could split the 1 and the 2, if Pierce is the 3.  Otherwise, Rondo or Pruitt will need to be in the game.  As I said, no way the Celtics should ever be playing Eddie 1, Tony 2 and Bill 3.  That doesn't work.

The good news is that this year's second unit will play much better as a unit than last year's team -- better team defense and more consistent offense.

So Scal or Miles, Miles or Scal ... too early to say.  The best developing stories so far are Tony Allen and POB; and the most important thing to watch will be the play of Gabe Pruitt.

Backup point (particularly on defense) is our biggest area of vulnerability, and our greatest opportunity for improvement as a team.  (Think about D Gibson, Pargo, Stuckey, L Williams, J Farmar).  If we can shut that down, it will make the lives of the starters much, much easier.

Teams are going to be coming after us all year long.  If we are going to repeat, our second unit will need to be much better than last year's unit.  We'll see if this group can get it done.

Cassell's attitude during camp and his absence during the preseason games would point to him wearing a suit sooner rather than latter. He played his role during camp, which was to light a fire under Pruitt and House. If Pruitt or Allen do not generate any trade interest, he is of little use as a 4th string backup. Either Cassell trades his uni for a suit or they let Giddens go. I think they keep Giddens. Scal will be gone by the trade deadline - one way or another; but his contract still has value till then.

If Miles, Pruitt or Giddens do not prove themselves unworthy over the next few games, then Cassell seems the obvious choice to me.  Why not?  Cassell will agree to coach and practice with the team. Then, one of 4 things happens:
1) A guard is injured and Cassell is added.
2) One of Miles, Giddens, Scal or Pruitt prove to be less valuable than Cassell (during season) and is cut. Cassell is added.
3) A trade occurs that opens a spot. Cassell is added.
4) The team's top 15 prove championship worthy and Cassell plays valued role as asst coach and practice player.

C's lose nothing by cutting Cassell to get to 15.  Good deal for Cassell too IMO.

Wow, I'm tempted to wager another BrickJames challenge on this one...but I've been burned once before.

It's going to be Pruitt, and it's not even going to be close.

That is, unless there's some sort of trade where we can move our poo-poo platter of Scal, House, TAllen, Powe and/or Baby for a useful player.

Please don't wager on the Celtics winning the title this year.

I was planning to repost this pole this week, to see what people thought after most of the preseason was over. I guess i was a little late to the party.

My prediction would have changed from Scal (there was no way the C's were gonna eat his $6 mil) to Miles (whose playing time plummetted, and seamed more like a small 4 than a power 3).

Got one right!

This thread isn't over yet, IMO. Barring a 2 for 1 trade, someone will be cut in the future to make room to PJ Brown (hopefully) or another big man. My early prediction is O'Bryant by a fair margin.
