The US has better EPL coverage on Fox Soccer and even ESPN has started showing scores on their bottom line scroll. Newcastle is my team... Passionate fan base, intimate stadium filled with those same fans, tradition of attacking and entertaining play, I love Newcastle beer, and they have the best jerseys in my opinion in the EPL (Black and white vertical stripes).

That said, I am obligated to inform you that they plain and simple suck right now. They might be relegated, and have precious little skill on the roster. Their best player flew the coop to Manchester City (Shay Given), and their cheap SOB owner won't spend money to improve the team. They're in the middle of a classic owner vs. fans confrontation, as Mike Ashley (the owner) sucks as an owner and the passionate fans rightfully hate him for it. However, he recently signed Alan Shearer, club legend, as the manager which made the fans happy. The team is in danger of relegation though, and keep an eye on them in the last few weeks of the season to see if they get bumped down. If relegated, it's pretty much impossible to follow them so they might not be your best bet.

A thought if you're a USA soccer fan though... Fulham has Clint Dempsey, who's doing great stuff for them as an American skill player in the EPL, which is fairly rare. They had success with McBride, and now Dempsey, so there's a record of American success with them if it's a draw for you.

If you go EPL, I beg you not to choose a team in the Big 4: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United. It's like rooting for the house in blackjack, and the world just doesn't need another fan of those 4. Have some fun with it :)

Haven't followed Barcelona much since Ronaldinho left. I always thought of them as what Newcastle wanted to be when they grew up: the ultimate fast attacking team. Eto'o is incredible.

Derby (Inter-city) rivals of Manchester United... Think Mets to the Manchester United Yankees. They're spending a ton of money to try and get good again, but it's not working yet. They took Newcastle's awesome goalie haha, and are in constant talks with the some of best players in the world right now. You could do a lot worse. Take a look at them and their roster, but it's certainly not a bad pick and they're plenty safe from relegation.

...and he duly delivered.

I so want to follow professional soccer, but I've never been able to attach to a team that isn't my home team... any advice?

There's a big problem nowadays. If you start supporting United, you'll be labelled a bandwagon fan (I received my first kit (jersey) for my first birthday - truly born and bred). Same with Liverpool, Chelsea and to a lesser degree Arsenal.

In England I've always had a soft spot for Aston Villa and Fulham.

In Europe, Hamburger SV, Glasgow Celtic, Fiorentina and Villareal I've always liked. I love Barcelona, from their colors to their style of play to their history, and following a recent trip there, the place. On May 27th, however, if Barca are the team we're drawn against, I will hate them.

if you don't want to be labelled a bandwagon fan, now is a very good time to become a fan of FC brugge. On the other hand, if you like to support a team that plays good tootball, maybe it isn't the time to becoma a fan of FC Brugge. Well, every medal has two sides.
