...and he duly delivered.
I so want to follow professional soccer, but I've never been able to attach to a team that isn't my home team... any advice?
I would say it depends on which domestic league you want to follow the most.
England´s Premier League is known as the best league in the world. Great arenas, the best players, great atmosphere, a highly energetic style of soccer, a high sense for fair play.
The spanish Primera Division has a lot of Flair, the top teams are comparable to the Premier League, and you´ll see a lot more beautiful offensive soccer than anywhere else.
In the german Bundesliga, only Bayern Munich is comparable to the english top teams, but overall it is the most competitive league, where games are closer and lower placed teams regularly beat higher placed teams. The arenas and atmosphere are comparable to the Premier League.
The italian Serie A claims to play the smartest soccer, which means they have a tactical approach to the game with a focus on defense. Horrible arenas, but lots of tradition and heated rivalries, which influences the atmosphere there. At the top, great teams and exceptional players, but a manipulation scandal a few years ago had cost them a lot of credibility.
There are many more domestic leagues in europe, but those are the big four. Russia is on the way.
I can´t recommend any team (look at my sig).
If you`re mainly interested in the Champions League and want to follow a team outside of the big four, I would say Olympique Lyonnais, FC Porto, Ajax Amsterdam (currently not) or one of the Glasgow teams (preferrably Celtic^^) are also a good choice.
And if you´re the fanatic type, you might want to follow one of the turkish top teams.
