Howie Mandel was really funny a long time ago.

I think Wanda Sykes is terrible.  Just my personal opinion.

I don't get why you say Dane Cook is underrated when he is currently the highest paid stand up comedian right now, he is definately OVERRATED, his only huge following is all middle school kids, which makes me hate him even more.

Dane Cook is also known for stealing alot of the jokes that he uses from other comedians.

Did someone say he was underrated?   Hah.  Funny.  I think what they were saying is that... Dane Cook became massive and in the process some people started to despise him and felt he was overrated.   Now suddenly it's the  "hip" and "cool" thing to say that Dane Cook is played out and unfunny...  the general consensus seems to be "Dane Cook sux".  And since he is, in fact, pretty funny... that probably makes him a little "underrated" at this point.   Hah... if that makes any sense...

Seriously though I don't get why ever suddenly hates Dane Cook.  I thought the guy was hilarious in the very first Comedy Central special I saw.   I've yet to have someone listen to one of his routines on CD or watch him and not giggle.   People just hate him, because he's massively popular and acts like an arrogant, cocky tool...   As a movie star he stinks, but as a stand-up he's definitely one of the funniest around.

I'd say maybe 70% of dane cook fans cant name one other stand up comic .. i have a hard time saying he is overrated to people who dont know anybody else, those people arent really fans of stand up comedy they just like dane because of his celebrity status those fans are the reason he makes so much money .. what im saying is i belive he is underrated to people like you, it seems like you know a thing or two about stand up but when you say you dislike him even more because of his fans? thats what i mean by him being underrated  .. people dislike him even more because of the money he makes and the fans who follow him rather than the quality of his performance ..

I think the reason people hate him is because he has a young following now, like middle school kids.  I don't want to listen to the same comedian as my 9 year old cousin.

The most successful band right now is actually the Jonus Brothers, do I like them Hell NO, do I think they are good, Hell NO. I think they are bad because they are a Disney Band and aren't true musicians.  Are they underrrated then ?

Meh that's the thing with Dane Cook.  He was clearly one of the best young comedians around... and as a result he became ridiculously popular... and as a result he became ridiculously famous... and as a result people now are jealous and despise him.

My buddy was building a website for one of my comedian friends and mentioned his philosophy for building the site.

My Friend:  "When you look at a comedian like Dane Cook for example... it's not that he's really that funny... it's about his image and the marketing around him.  That's what I want to recreate.".

Me:  "But dude... don't you have like 5 Dane Cook CDs?"

My Friend: "Well yeah.  I mean... he's funny and all but his image..."

Me:  "Dude... didn't you go to his concert when he was in town?"

My Friend: "... shut up"

The fact is, Dane Cook is one of the better stand-up comedians around right now.  He also has a massive following of rabid teeny bopper fans.  And as Tw1X990 said, his fans are ignorant and naive... but that doesn't really tell me about Cook as a comedian.  As a comedian, I'd still rather watch him perform than 90% of other comics out there.  Cook cracks me up fairly consistently and does a great job at his character (which is being copied by a lot of lesser known comics at the moment... Nick Swardson is an example of someone who kinda copies Cook's style to great success.   Kyle Cease is another lesser known guy who is equally pretty funny doing a style derivative of Cook).

I think it all started with this for Cook:

Guy just got huge from there.  Anyone who bashes him should try listening to one of his CDs and not laughing.  It's tough.

I agree with you, I think Dane Cook is pretty good at stand up comedy, maybe I did liked him more because he wasn't so well known at the time.  He is horrible in movies though he should stick to stand up.  However, there are so many more comedians who are better than him that don't even come close to his success financially.  I also hate Carlos Mencia, I don't find him funny at all.

Artie Lange from the Howard Stern is kinda like Dane Cook. I saw Artie perform stand up and he was just ok and he sold out a really huge show. Dane Cook sold out the TD Banknorth Garden back to back showings both sold out and I thought he was just ok.

Yeah man, but if you watched one of his HBO specials it's tough not to laugh at some of his bits.  He definitely has a way of storytelling and absurd use of vocabulary that makes his act ridiculous and giggle-worthy.   Sure, there are better comedians.  But you can't really compare the guy to the jonas brothers just because he's popular.  He's the first comedian since Steve Martin to have an album debut at #1.  I will not disagree that he makes some bad movies, but he's definitely a top stand-up comedian.

Here's a guy whose style is sometimes pretty similar to Dane Cook at times.   You guys probably haven't seen him before.  I've seen him live a few times (he's one of my friend's favorites) .  Kyle Cease.  He cracks me up.  Another absurd style (WARNING:  Profanity):

I didn't see Dane Cook's most recent show (the one you saw at TD Banknorth), but I hear it wasn't as good as his other stuff.
