Meh that's the thing with Dane Cook. He was clearly one of the best young comedians around... and as a result he became ridiculously popular... and as a result he became ridiculously famous... and as a result people now are jealous and despise him.
My buddy was building a website for one of my comedian friends and mentioned his philosophy for building the site.
My Friend: "When you look at a comedian like Dane Cook for example... it's not that he's really that funny... it's about his image and the marketing around him. That's what I want to recreate.".
Me: "But dude... don't you have like 5 Dane Cook CDs?"
My Friend: "Well yeah. I mean... he's funny and all but his image..."
Me: "Dude... didn't you go to his concert when he was in town?"
My Friend: "... shut up"
The fact is, Dane Cook is one of the better stand-up comedians around right now. He also has a massive following of rabid teeny bopper fans. And as Tw1X990 said, his fans are ignorant and naive... but that doesn't really tell me about Cook as a comedian. As a comedian, I'd still rather watch him perform than 90% of other comics out there. Cook cracks me up fairly consistently and does a great job at his character (which is being copied by a lot of lesser known comics at the moment... Nick Swardson is an example of someone who kinda copies Cook's style to great success. Kyle Cease is another lesser known guy who is equally pretty funny doing a style derivative of Cook).
I think it all started with this for Cook:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttuWrst0YSQGuy just got huge from there. Anyone who bashes him should try listening to one of his CDs and not laughing. It's tough.
