I love unbridled optimism but unbridled optimism to the point of having a one way ticket down the rabbit hole to Wonderland gets to be a bit much.
I don't have a problem with the signing because it is a non guaranteed contract. But lets please come back to reality with what will be expected out of Darius Miles this year.
1.) Doctors don't lie and they definitely don't don't collude to make sure a malcontent player is effectively wiped off the books and can't come back to play basketball. Three separate doctors took a look at the microfracture injury that Miles, two of the doctors called it the worst microfracture injury they had ever seen in their careers. They concluded that for the patient's own good he should get a knee replacement and never play basketball again. God bless Darius Miles if he does come back and actually makes this team. Don't be surprised if he goes down at some point and is carted off the court in a stretcher.
2.) The fact that he has been out of competitive basketball for two years makes me seriously doubt that he could come back and be the same type of player and be able to put up similar numbers to what he has in the past. Now couple that with the fact that he has serious knee problems and the likelihood and is greater that he won't be the player he once was. How some of you can just see Miles' name and then just jump to the conclusion that he will be antwhere near the same player astounds me.
3.) I think the fact that Danny gave him a non-guaranteed contract speaks volumes for Danny's expectations as to the chances of Darius Miles making this team. Other players that have been given non-guaranteed contracts by Danny in the past haven't made the team. I see no reason to expect any different.
4.)Also, even when Miles was playing, it's not like he was a superstar. He was very inconsistent, and was a terrible shooter. (Just thought I'd add that to the mix.)
1. Doctors just like every one else can be wrong.
2. Being out of competitive basketball for this long should have lit a fire under him, he was always touted as the next big thing, now he knows he has to work to get there.
3. The non guaranteed contract alleviates all pressure. If he is bad we cut him, if he is good we can stay. His ceiling is a good 6th man, his floor is an empty roster spot (which is where we were before we signed him).
4. Miles wasn't a superstar when he was playing, but it's not like players have never gotten better past the age of 26. He could be a valuable bench player with us for part of the year and then explode onto the scene in the second half of the season. The C's don't really need a superstar at this point.
