My favorite part of the interview was when Danny basically admitted that Doc made a mistake by not using Eddie House early on in the playoffs (which a lot of us were complaining about at the time)...and that Doc finally realized his error and made the adjustment.
The only thing that drives me crazy about that is that that logic ignores the reason Doc benched House in the first place: he's not that good. He played great in a couple games in the playoffs (game 4 of the Finals comes to mind), but most of the time he was mediocre to poor. Furthermore, the reason he got minutes was more a testament to how poorly Cassell was playing (the worst I ever saw him play), than a testament to House's ability. People like to pretend that Cassell stunk up the first half of the playoffs and then Doc "came to his senses," benched him, and House lit it up in the playoffs. Actually, it went more like this:
Cassell played OK against Atlanta, scoring in double digits in 3 of the Celtics 4 wins. Cassell continued to play well in the first two wins against Cleveland, scoring 13 and 9 points respectively. Then he preceded to stink it up for the next 3 games, inspiring Doc to use House to finish off Cleveland. House did OK in the last two games of the Cleveland series, playing 18 minutes in a Celtic loss in game 6, scoring 8 points; he did rather poorly in the game 7 win, going 1-5 in 15 minutes. However, despite Cassell's poor play in Cleveland and House's mediocrity, Doc showed his true fear in playing House against a strong defensive team, going back to Cassell in Detroit. He didn't play well in limited minutes; but neither did House when Doc tried him. In the NBA Finals, House played reasonably well, but he only played in 4 games, in which the Celtics went 2-2. Cassell played less minutes, but appeared in 5 games in which the C's went 3-2. The only game where House really stood out was game 4, when he put up 11 points in the great come from behind victory. He put up decent stats in game 6, but that was mostly in garbage time.
Overall, I'm not trying to disparage House too much. I just think there's a bit of a myth going on right now about how good he was last year. I think it's of little surprise that Doc only went to him a) after Cassell had a string of rotten games and b) probably most importantly, only against the worst defensive team they saw in the playoffs.
