Well, good for Posey. I wonder if that last year at $7 mil is fully guaranteed. If so, i think this is a bad signing by NO. They need a nice quick 2, instead they have a stack of 3s. Heck even at 3 years this isn't a good move by NO.

At the SF they have: Peja, MoPete, Julian Wright and Posey. How will they all play.

At least he's out west and not with the Lakers.

I'm cool with this.  4 years is too much for him.   He's become rather overrated by people on this board and obviously he's overrated by a lot of the league as well.  Kudos to Ainge for sticking with it.  Now we can use part of that MLE to sign Bill Walker to a 3 year deal (preserving his bird rights in the event he "breaks out") and use the rest to split to a couple players who can help us next season.

I'm fine with this for some reason...we need cap flexibility for 2010.

I expect this to start a ball rolling with some other names though...

You risk winning in the next couple of year (which is the window btw) for cap space in 2010?

I like (by like I mean that sarcastically) the way Marc Stein explains the Celtics reasoning

Quote
Because of luxury-tax concerns, Boston was reluctant to offer Posey, 31, more than a two-year deal in spite of his considerable contributions to the Celtics' first championship since 1986.

Thank God maybe now we won't hear all the nonsense about a 7 pt scorer being the key to #18.

It's one thing to overpay Posey for two or three years, a fourth was too much. This is fine. Let's go after Ricky Davis (3 mill per should be enough) and 2 mill for Barnes? This is fine. Atleast there is some resolution.

Good for him. He never had to come here to begin with, but did and helped us win a title.

4 years at the full MLE is going to have him set for life. Way too much for a bench player, but hey, winning a title increases your value.

No, that's not what it's about. Does anyone honestly think this knocks us down from the pedestal as contenders? Absolutely not.

I think this is a mistake by Ainge.  Garnett's here for four more years as it is.  I can't imagine that Pierce doesn't get extended to at least the end of Garnett's deal.  Rondo is going to get a pretty sweet long term deal at some point.  So I don't know where Danny realistically thinks that he's going to need cap room in the next 4 years.  Moreover, banking on cap room in 3 years doing something for the C's is a long shot at best.  The premier free agents will likely re-sign with their current teams; furthermore, in 3 years, the appeal of playing with Pierce and Garnett isn't going to be what is is now as both will be in their mid 30s.  On top of all of that, if Danny wants to make a big FA run, there's no reason why that can't happen in 2011, rather than 2010.  So in short, there was no reason not to give Posey 4 years other than the fact that he might have been declining by the end.

That said, hopefully Ainge can do something to help fill Posey's shoes.  Darius Miles intrigues me.  He has the ability to both play and guard most positions on the floor.  I worry about his shooting range, though.  One of the big pluses with Posey is that he could space the floor very well.

I would guess the % of people that thought Ainge should sign a 7pt career 6 man to whatever he wants is pretty close to the % of people that openly said Ainge didn't know what he was doing prior to May of 2007.  So in the respect maybe they should rethink their opinions.

good for posey. 4 years at the full MLE is too much - 3 was the most i'd want the c's to give him. at 27-28, a no-brainer. but he's 31. i wish him well. now the question is, who do we get?

OK - so the answer is yes to the question: Will someone overpay for Posey... Now the C's can move on and fill out their roster. My thanks to Posey for his contributions to #17 - I'll remember him fondly... But I posted before that if a team is expecting Posey to come in and be one of the main contributors, they will be sorely disappointed. It seemed to me Ainge understand his value and what his role was - he is a role player, less than 20 minutes a game except occasionally when needed to spot start or if he is having a great game - trying counting on him for 30 minutes + and I think the Hornets will find that he is not that player.
Now, on to 18...
