See above link, where Marc Spears reports that C's are unlikely to offer Posey more than 2 years at the mid-level.  If true, just unbelievably crazy.

If the story is true I say good for Danny. Especially if he gets it done for that time.

If he loses out then it becomes a wait and see game for me to see who he does eventually get. I really don't see a ton of downside in the POB signing and if we losePosey I will reserve judgement on losing him until I see who we do in fact go to war with.

Thanks for the update.  The article didn't say why Spears thinks it's unlikely to be more than a 2-year deal from the Celtics.

If the announcement is Monday though, I would think that would favor the Celtics.  Is Posey really going to show up at the DVD party with his teammates and public appearances Monday and Tuesday and announce that he's joined another team?  If that's the case, why not wait until he's out of town to make the announcement.  If he makes an announcement here, I would think it would be good news for the Celtics.  Who knows?

The Hornets would be a good second choice for him.  Their stars are young and could contend for years to come.

If he leaves, the sixth spot will be a big role to fill, and I don't see another UFA that fills that role.  How about a trade -- Giddens, Baby and Scal (to match salaries) for either Childress or Deng?

First choice though, would be Posey.

What does seem promising is that the decision is coming sooner rather than latter. Whereas the agent for Pose had earlier said he was waiting for other team(s) to get their houses in order freeing up space with trades and perhaps that is unlikely now.(?)

Pose did make it known he wanted to make an early decision this year which helps out the Celtics rather than letting this unknown drag on and tieing us up from choosing other options, if it comes to that.

Wow, talk about hardball if Spears is correct in the offer being for two years @ MLE...
Of course that maybe a nicely planted leak too as a pressure tactic...

Fingers crossed here for the 3 year deal, for all partys involved...

I want my Big Game James for Christmas in July  ;)

Amen that the first choice is Posey.

While I like Childres and Deng, I don't think the proposal you suggested gets the deal done for either of them -- and that isn't from discomfort on either end.  Alas, I don't have a better one to offer, but I do think it worth noting that  a deal for those players would likely require considerably more from our end.

How surprising it is that the Celtics are still in the running if they only offered a 2 year contract.

Is there a team offering 3?

Missing out on Posey because they won't go over two years would be monumentally dumb. He should be about as good as he was this year for at least two years and probably a third - and in the third year he would be a valuable expiring contract no matter how well he played.

Sure two years would be great (Ray, Scal and Posey would combine for around $27 million-ish coming off the books) but I don't really understand why they wouldn't go to three years. This is the championship window we're talking about and this is not a franchise crippling contract by any means.

So they want him off the books in 2010 if Poss stays a Celtic? that should give most "bloggers" on here something to speculate why they would want to do.

As allready stated here a few times, 3-4 years to poss would not be a bad contract, but if we are trying to rebuild in 2010 (3 years) or 2011 (4 years) then suddonly it does become a bothersome contract to get rid off.

Anyway, most likely its just something that Posey's agent is blowing around to get market value & interrest up on posey but if there is truth to it.. 2010? now that i do find interresting to think about..

a possibility not discussed much but if danny believes highly in the future capability of jr and bill walker he might not want to sign posey to a longterm deal knowing that in a couple of years they should both should be ready for serious playing time.

yeah.. no! Bruce Bowen is the perfect example of how long Posey can be effective (Poss is 31, Bowen is 37 and Bowen made All Defensive 1st Team at said age)

If it has anything to do with age at all, its the age of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett! and when its time to move or retire those players.

That is a valid point! but i find to many question marks regarding both players for it to make logical sense. If a decision between 2-4 years was made by the Celtics front office regarding James, i doubt it was made based on our draft picks. Money (wanting to spend them on securing Rondo maybe?) or future plans regarding our Big3! thats what i would bank my money on.

JR and BW will be good ballers in 2 yrs time and so there really is no point in giving Pose a 3 much less a 4 yr deal...It won't be happening, I for one believe Danny got a steal with Giddens in that he will be very ready and capable in spelling Ray immediately, Walker is Pierce's understudy, same height same strength and Walker already is on board on learning Pierce's game...I love Posey but the most really we should give him is 3 yrs, if his agent does not bite, Im willing to let him get his 4 yrs elsewhere...If ever there is one then he should have beeen signed by now don't you think?

Posey really is a critical guy to re-sign. I know a lot of you guys think he can be (somewhat) easily replaced, but his toughness, cold blood when shooting big shots and plenty of other intangibles make him a must have back on the C's.

If worst comes to worst and he starts to decline in his 3rd or 4th year of the deal, the contract won't be so large that it's impossible to move(as someone else mentioned already), so the downside is far outweighed by the upside (bringing back a 2-time champion with good great defense, big shot-making skills, good character and a willingness to do the small things it takes to win with little to no glory.)
