i was nervous about this at first becuase i'm really hoping we land the birdman. but since everyones saying this is more of a pollard replacement than a brown replacement i still feel pretty good, granted i've been in Maine for a week and all i have for celtics talk is 'Comcast Sport's Net'.

Okay, according to Fox Sports, it's a one-year minimum deal, with a second year team option.  I can live with that.

Quote
The Boston Celtics have reached a one-year deal with former lottery pick Patrick O'Bryant.

O'Bryant was drafted ninth overall in the 2006 draft by the Golden State Warriors, but averaged 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds in two seasons.

The Celtics, who hold a club option for a second season, will likely lose veteran big man P.J. Brown, and O'Bryant is worth the risk at minimum salary.

O'Bryant also fielded interest from Miami, Indiana and Minnesota.

i trust danny but i dunno, this guy over chris anderson or even a guy like david harrison??

I don't think you can look at it that way.  Chances are Anderson and Harrison were both looking for more than the minimum (they both are more proven), and given the C's situation (if they want any chance of resigning Posey), they can't really afford to be using any more than the minimum for a big man who they can't completely count on (which would be all 3 of them).

Harrison said he would play for the minimum if he got lots of PT.  With Perk banged up (and foul prone) He could get those minutes as second string Center. Hopefully Clifford Ray saw something in O'Bryant's workout that we don't know, and some time having his butt kicked by KG,  Perk and BBD/Powe for that matter in practice plus working with Clifford Ray will make him a serviceable Big man.  I REALLY hope he is the third option though.  He does seem to have the physical tools/potential to be a decent player.  I hope he's willing to work.

There's a really good joke in there somewhere about black Irish, but I'm not going there.

Yeah, we should probably keep jokes about a player's race to a minimum, even if they're meant without any malice.

In Danny We Trust... hopefully this guy turns out to be atleast a solid back up to Perk... but from what ive seen from him he's got work to do... right now im just hoping pruitt and our rookies come out to play and give our bench a lift

It's a common misconception, us black irish are actually 5'11" white guys with good post moves.

Well, having never seen him play, at least that I can remember, I'm ok with the signing. It's cheap money, he's probably not going to play much, and there is at least some potential there.
And if he really sucks, it'll be one less player that we're all begging Doc to play more. Of course, Doc will probably bench Leon for this guy ::)

Maybe they saw him as a young Kendrick Perkins with more height and athletic ability.

i don't know about that. He seems to me like a mark blount with better rebound and shotblocking abilities. From youtube and his conditioning he looks a little laid back. Mark blount wasn't the worst player, just paid too much and he lost his drive because he got a contract

I hate this signing. The rationale behind going younger with the supporting cast so as to not wear down in the playoffs like other "older" teams have had issues with in the past is understandable and perfectly just. However, O'Bryant should have been the ABSOLUTE last resort option.

Why does Danny Ainge hit and miss with free agents so much?

Why sign this bum to a two-year deal when Kurt Thomas, Birdman, and Elson, among others, who are far more reliable and experienced, are still looking for a job?

I hope the contract is non-guaranteed. But assuming it's not, he can be used as a filler in any trade without a worry in the world about having it vetoed. A two year contract does not give said player the ability to veto trades like a one year contract permits players a la Devean George.
