I realize that Tony Allen has his supporters and detractors on this forum, but failing to extend a qualifying offer to Tony Allen is a cheap, chintzy move that is beneath the Celtics franchise.  It's like something Donald Sterling and the Clippers would do.

Tony Allen is a heck of a defender and has been a good teammate.  Even his detractors remember how well he was playing before his injury.  And $2.7 million is peanuts by NBA standards (even if you take the luxury tax into account), especially for a 4th year player with TA's skills.

And to make matters worse, Rivers lied when asked about Tony Allen.  He said that he wanted him back, and implied that the club was interested in having Tony back.  He said that Giddens was not drafted to replace TA. 

Ubuntu or no ubuntu, Rivers is a prevaricating snake who talks out of both sides of his mouth.  As in the situation where he lied about the reasons why Telfair did not return for the second half in NY, he just made matters worse by being untruthful.

If I were James Posey, I would think long and hard about entering into a long-term contract with a franchise capable of acting in this matter.  Shame on you, Celtics.

Maybe they want Tony back, but at a cheaper price?  At least that's what I'm hoping.  As I have said before, I don't like the idea of counting on the rookie Giddens to contribute and replace Tony.  Tony is a better player than a lot of folks on this blog is giving him credit for, especially when healthy.

Except they drafted someone to replace him.   They are going to go into the luxury tax to add veterans that will help this team win.




TA was not worth either the qualifying offer nor the extra tax that the Celtics would pay for it.   



This is far from a Clipper move.   The Clipper move would have been to let all FA walk and trade one of the three stars for cheaper role players.  Oh, and they would never be the defending champ.

I don't think Doc lied here. There is a difference between saying you want someone and saying you are going to make them an offer. Just because Doc one day says he wants Lebron on the team doesn't mean we are making Lebron an offer. Same goes for Tony, it's all a matter of finances.

They drafted two people to replace him, why would they want to resign him?  Why take the risk of giving him a qualifying offer at all?  What if every team realizes that he's had two knee surgeries, one out of stupidity, and isn't worth any more money and no one takes a chance on him.

He lied, at least as his comments were reported in the press.  Go back and read the article.  Rivers almost certainly knew that the QO would not be extended when he opened his mouth.  As for letting TA become an unrestricted free agent and then trying to sign him for less than $2.7 million, that's also a classic Clippers move.

If TA fully recovers from his injury, he is the kind of player who could help beat the Celtics in a playoff series if he signs with a team like Cleveland or even the Wizards, who always give the Celtics trouble and who are in the market for a shooting guard.  It would serve Rivers right.

That is ridiculous! One of the most important things in NBA is financial flexibility! Luckily Danny Ainge is more than aware of this.

Tony Allen option was $2,75 million and since we are over the cap that means $5,5 million. You think Tony is worth 5,5 mio per year?

It was a smart decision by the management. We need to be in control of our cap situation...

I don't mind the not offering the qualifying offer, if their belief is that that he won't get that much in the market and that they can sign him for cheaper.

The belief that I really hate is the "two people to replace him" notion. Is a lateral move. It doesn't improve the team at all, in fact, it might make it worse.

This is a business.  TA's qualifying offer was going to cost to much for the role he plays on the Celtics.  The Celtics just drafted two backup swingmen.  Their number one FA target is Posey, a SF.  

They still have holes on the bench at C and PG.  They probably also want to add a shooter.

Maybe TA didn't want to come back so he could, you know, actually get some PT.  Therefore extending the QO for him would be for no benefit to the team and they decided not to do it.

I think he stinks anyway, other than on D and we got 2 guys in the draft that will more than replace his skill set.
