If no Posey, Artest?

Okay, this whole scenario is rather farfetched and presupposes many things, but hear me out.

James Posey has now won two World Campionships in two different places. he's accomplished his goal in life and his stock as a player probably couldn't get much higher. So if he decides financial security is his number one next step and we can not afford him what do we do?

Well, if Artest opts out, which I know, reports out of Sacramento are that he may not, could we make a run at him. Sure all we have is the MLE but if we address the back up PG with someone like Roger Mason, and draft a big and reup PJ Brown, wouldn't Artest be a nice piece to have.

Granted, we would be relying on the lure of being on a repeat World Championship team and hope Artest would be willing to sacrifice cash for legacy, but considering his past would you do it?

I happen to think that with an established championship core, a strong coach and front office situation, and three superstars that will keep him in order or kill him, it would be a perfect upgrade over Posey.

Think of it as Rodman joining the Bulls. Or even better, DJ joining the Celtics. Bad apples that bettered their teams while at least, to some extent at first with Rodman, calming down their antics for the good of the team.

Or if not, I like Matt Barnes on the cheap and Andris Beadrins in a similar MLE scenario.

I think Artest in the right situation can be great. He's a heck of a player. I doubt he'd want to come off the bench though.

I think if there's one guy who could rein in Artest and focus his considerable energy on team play and winning, it's Garnett.  But there's no way we'd get the guy.  If we could, though, I'd take him.

Ron Artest would cost more than Posey and we don't know what he would do to the chemistry of the team.  Why not just pay Posey and avoid Artest altogether?  Makes more sense to me to just pay Posey since we know what we are getting in him, rather than rolling the dice with Artest.  Plus, Artest would want to start and Posey has no problem coming off the bench.  I hear the Lakers are interested in Artest.  Let them get him and ruin their team.  Anyone remember a couple of years ago, Artest wanted to be the go-to scorer on his team so that he can get a max contract like other top scorers? ::)

This was Cedric Maxwell's idea.  I heard him mention it on WEEI yesterday. Max is the same guy who didn't want to trade BigAl and wanted to trade Pierce instead for Devin Harris and that weed head Josh Howard. ::)  I'm done listening to Max.

No thanks to Artest.  Just pay Posey.

I don't like Artest and in realistic conditions, I wouldn't want him to join the team. For the MLE, I'd have to consider it, as he would be a very cheap player.

But why the hell would Artest take such a pay-cut? He would opt-out of a $8,450,000 contract to sign a $5,800,000 one?

This is simply not happening.

This is absolutely one of the worst ideas out there. Artest is a horrible addition to a team that prides itself off of chemistry. There are players out there that have had issues and come into a championship team like a Randy Moss, but the problem with Artest is that he is literally crazy IMO. There is something mentally wrong with that guy and he can't be depended on to react the way a normal person would. There is no way you bring in a guy that could completely blow up this team no matter how talented he is.

Why? Why would the C's take the risk of signing a poison such as Artest? We have, with admitted bias, put together not only the best team of basketball players but one of the best group of individuals that are on any NBA team. Danny isn't going to take any character risks at this point. The window is open for at least 2 more years of championship potential. In 2010-11 Ray's contract is up and at that time I think barring injury before hand will be the first time a real overhaul on the roster would be necessary. For this year and next we just need to tweak the bench and make some decisions on 'Big Baby' and Powe's future when they become FA.

Wow. Not me. Kobe is one of a handful of players I wouldn't take under any circumstances - and it's not because I dislike him or the Lakers. Kobe is a cancer - Artest is just a loose cannon. Loose cannons can be reigned in - cancers just spread. Besides Artest fits a need. Kobe doesn't - we already have Pierce (whom I'd much rather have than Kobe).

If Posey leaves and if artest will take a pay cut, why not?? Pierce already said a few years ago that he would love to go to battle with artest any day..

Well, the premise of this thread is finding someone to replace Posey if he leaves. As a player, Artest is really a perfect fit. Yes, he's something of a character risk. But those risks are greatly reduced when you're talking about him joining a championship team with some well-established, well-respected, strong-character veterans like Garnett and Pierce (and, to a lesser extent, Allen). You'd have to believe that if Ainge is ok with it, then we should be too. If Ainge sees a potential problem, he wouldn't do it. I suspect that after vetting Artest thoroughly, Ainge would be perfectly comfortable bringing Artest on board. He'd probably become the feel-good story of the year ("Talented player with troubled past joins a winning team and thrives").

Could someone please PM me when Artest is finally reigned in somewhere?  The guy is a lunatic. 

If Posey goes, despite a big offer from the Cs,and Artest can be had, I would think that Ainge and ownership will have to consider it, but there' s very high likelihood that Artest will go off the reservation, like he has EVERY single place where he's played before. 

A non-psycho Artest who buys in to everything the Cs are doing and sacrifices his game for the good of the team makes the 2009 Celtics potentially one of the best half dozen teams in NBA history.  But those are big "ifs."  Danny would be wise to play the pat hand with Posey.

You're right. Danny isn't going to take any character risks at this point and Artest is one of the biggest character risks out there. If you don' think that he is then you're crazier than Artest is.

Artest is less crazy than Rodman and the Bulls were able to reign him in to the tune of several NBA titles. Just sayin.
