all year i've worried like many others on the big 3's health, their conditioning. when they won, i think ever single celtic puffed a cigar, even doc. yes i understand it's for red but today during the parade, they did it again. and it's not like its really just for show either- they're really puffing away, especially pierce.

For example, in mainstream smoke there is about 3 mg of nicotine/gram of tobacco smoked in cigars compared to 0.6 to 1.4 mg/gram of tobacco smoked in cigarettes. Cigars have also been identified as increasing the risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and coronary heart disease compared to nonsmokers and the risk increased with greater smoking (New England J of Medicine, June, 1999, p. 1773-80).

i don't want any celtic to get too comfortable with this smoking business. am i the only one who cares about this? if they're all a step slow next year, don't blame it on their age, blame it on this. celebrate differently. i'm not sayin it's going to kill them. merely affect their conditioning when age is already not on their side.

I think if any of them did (except for maybe Doc) then the media would get in on it, and I bet KG (omg can't imagine him smoking cigs everyday ugh) would latch onto whomever.

Personally, I can't stand to be in the presence of any secondary smoke, and I stay away from anybody who smokes, for my own good. The fact that people can be so dumb to get hooked onto these things, and stay on show they have no drive to avoid 60+ carcinogens in a cigarette.

Ah, I can keep ranting about these [dang] cigarettes, the #1 problem in my state where I live. They've had city bans in public places already.

Yes.

This abstinence-only appraach to smoking is not effective.  Whatever we say or do, kids are going to smoke and experiment with smoking. We need to teach kids about "safe smoking".

Just a quick politics topic warning.  Let's keep this away from any legislative issues involving smoking.

Give me a break smoking a few cigars is not going to kill a world class athlete any time soon..If it was an every day thing maybe you would be concerned..
See, this is why I'm not allowed to announce NBA games -- I'd be talking in the Cookie Monster voice right now:

Ahhhhhhhhhh ... my knee hurts ... ahhhhhhhhhhhhh ... me don't like when my knee hurts ...

Is this a real debate?  Who cares they just won the title...Red smoked them on the bench, which makes me think...if Red were coaching when would he have lit up?  Would he have waited until the 4th quarter?

I can't begrudge the boys in green for a celebratory cigar a la Red.

Also, anyone catch the Rachel Nichols report on The Captain hanging onto a cigar Red gave him before he died and saying that now he can finally smoke it. Excellent.

You're joking right? And the world is flat? The health risks from smoking are not even debatable. Have you seen a smoker's lung compared to a healthy lung?

I'm not usually a "ranter" but this whole "kids will do whatever they want so let's encourage them to do it safely" is the biggest load of crap in the world. Unfortunately, it's a popular attitude because it absolves people of responsibility. Heaven forbid we should take some responsibility upon ourselves to teach our kids. And heaven forbid we should draw a few lines for our kids that should never be crossed. Goodness, if we did such a thing, we'd be "limiting" their "life" experience to their detriment! Wo is us!! ....Complete and utter hogwash.

(ok, I'll get off my soapbox now...)
