Please note, I'm not trying to offend KG or Ray fans, I'm not saying this theory is remotely accurate.

Say you're at a local watering hole getting ready to take in the NBA Finals.  A fellow sidles up to the bar beside you, orders a beer, and says big game tonight, huh?  You notice he's wearing some form of Celtics apparel.  If you're like me, you're probably wondering if he's a true Celtics fan or as Mike Bibby's Remnants described a "Bandwagon Jumper".  You could give him the Larry David look over, but I suspect this would be largely unhelpful.  You need an approach that doesn't come off as a patronizing trivia question, like can you name the Celtics' 3 point guards last season?  What I've come up with is a one step process that I call the PlayRyanGomes Presumption.  Although it cannot provide an unassailable answer to this question, it may prove informative.

PlayRyanGomes Presumption-Step One:

1) Ask said fan who his favorite Celtic is.

If his answer is Paul Pierce, it's more likely than not he's a Celtics Die Hard.  I find it hard to believe anyone who has been trudging along with this team for the last 10+ years would not cite the Captain as his/her favorite Celtic.  We've gone through all the ups and downs together.  We've appreciated his young playoff successes, argued that the national media didn't realize how good he was when his teams struggled, and even hung our heads when he embarrassed us in Indiana.  But while KG has been like a torrid love affair, the Truth has been a long time marriage, and to paraphrase Orleans: Still the one that makes us laugh, Still the one that's our better half, We're still having fun, and you're still the one.

If his answer is KG, it's more likely than not you're talking to a Casual Fan or alternatively a Bandwagon Jumper.  He probably has never heard of John Carroll.  He probably doesn't know what city Tony Allen is from.  And don't waste your time making Employee #8 references.

If his answer is Ray Allen, you're more likely than not talking to a chick.  I find Ray Allen tends to resonate with the female fan base more than Paul Pierce or Kevin Garnett.  The bad news: she probably doesn't know much about the Celtics and just finds Ray Allen cute.  The good news: a chick approached you at a bar and started talking Celtics, so you got that going for you, which is nice.

The Rondo Corollary:
If his answer is Rondo abandon the PlayRyanGomes Presumption.  You could be talking to a Die Hard, Casual Fan, Bandwagon Jumper, or chick.  Rondo runs the gamut.  You're on your own.

lol nice.   Good call man... good call.

I live in Seattle.  I've sought this state out and determined years ago that I was the only true Celtic fan living out here other than my father.  It's a lot easier for me.  I just automatically assume they are bandwagon jumpers because there is a 99.99999999999999% chance they are.  Theres some autograph hound out here who use to be buddies with Eric Williams.  He's been a Celtic fan. He's the only one who counts imo.

I use to bump into random strangers in the mall wearing a Pierce jersey or something and I'd flat out go up to them and say, "so are you actually a fan or just like wearing green?".   Every single time it ended up just being some [guy] who collected random basketball jerseys and baller caps to complete his outfit.

I like this post. I wonder where the answer "Scalabrine" fits into the PlayRyanGomes model.

Another possible diehard response is confusion. I tend to waver from day to day. I'd have to think about this if someone asked me. The best part about this team is that everyone is basically likeable. I remember in the past where I would strongly dislike a bunch of players on the team. I don't think I hate anyone on this team. No more Mark Blounts.

The real way to tell a Celtics die hard is if they couldn't care less what time a Red Sox regular season game starts during a Celtics v Lakers finals!

Pretty cool theory ... and accurate, at least as far as I'm concerned, as my (obvious) favorite player on the team (right now) is Paul Pierce, and I am a die-hard, 40+ year fan. TP

Sorry, RR ... I agree with most of what you say, but I'm a die-hard, and I do NOT want Antoine back, or even another thread about him!   :)

I really liked Erick Strickland and mid-season pick-up Rodney Rogers (not to mention Walt-ah!) on that 2001-02 team.  Wonder where that leaves me... eh, PP was pretty okay then, too... ;)

Also, TP for PlayRyan for "Mike Bibby's Remnants" as a proper noun.  I like it, I like it a lot.

I think this applies to current Cs, right? Most older celtics fans would throw out Bird or even reach further back to the all-timers. I'm 34 so for me it's Bird all-time. Presently I have to admit that it's Pierce and a huge reason is because he's been so consistently good, but he's still unappreciated on a national level. There is still the feeling that we all know something the out of Boston media and fans do not... There's something likable about a guy who doesn't get his just praise...

  • The good ole days.
Well my favorite is Kevin Garnett, I can say John Carroll is a fairly long time Celtics Assistant Coach, Employee #8 is Mr. Antoine Shimmy Walker, but I can't tell you where TA is from... but I know he played for Oklahoma State and scored 6 straight 20 point games before injuring his knee last year.

But then again, I've never claimed to be a Celtic die-hard.... as I've said all season, I'm on loan from the TWolves while their management continues to run the team into the ground and our entire history is fighting for a championship in Boston.

Let's go KG!

(I think that test pretty much works though.... funny thing, if I did this test around Minnesota, I'm guessing most fans would either answer "Kevin Garnett" or "I can't name any" as their favorite Wolves player.)

This post, regardless of its actual accuracy, is pretty awesome.  I especially like the Rondo Corollary.

Yep, 'Toine.  'Twas a longtime nickname for him amongst the Boston faithful, and I believe there were some commercials made (which may have precipitated the nickname) featuring a "employee no. 8" theme of sorts.

Could mot agree more with this post. I have been a die hard fan since Paul Pierce was drafted (I'm only 19 years old) so he's my favorite Celtic/player of all time. The only thing I disagree on is Rondo. If he's their favorite Celtic, then your always talking to a young die hard fan or a chick. Most casual/bandwagoners I know always bring up the fact that he can't shoot which annoys the crap outta me.
