meh the majority of the bandwagon hoppers who started rooting for the team after the KG trade still probably couldn't tell you who Esteban Batista was... and probably have never heard of Gabe Pruitt.  Honestly.  I wore a Celtic t-shirt to a couple local pubs in Seattle after we finished off Detroit and I was approached by 4-5 pretend Celtic fans who wanted to share in my glee.  More or less I was just annoyed... I'm positive none of those people even knew who Glen Davis is.  And they probably thought "Mr. Tom Thibodeau" was a pet name I gave my junk.

Great post- very well written. BTW, just to nitpick, the word is 'gamut'.
I love PP- ferocious competitor and highly skilled. As a Celtic diehard, I don't really care if he's underrated, I'm just glad he's still here and is finally getting to play in the finals. Rondo is my second favorite- just fun to watch. We've been waiting for a point guard this good for a long time.
The part about the Red Sox is very true, at least for me. I'll catch up with them after #17's won. I just realized a day or two ago that Tina Cervasio wasn't there anymore.  I did see the brawl though, way to go Coco!
Back to the C's, I'm not a memorabilia collector, but I do have a '74 playoff program, LB Wheaties box, Dave Cowens bball camp t-shirt, autographed(by KC) Celtics 50th year book, a Celtics lamp, and a few other things around.  I'll watch a C's preseason game over a regular season Sox game anytime(how about that Brandon Wallace, huh?), and hope Mike and Tommy go on for another 20 years.

A quick and easy way to find out if they are a true Celtics diehard is to ask them which players were traded for Garnett. No casual fan could name all 5 players.

Back last summer I worked at a state resort park in Tennessee and we had our names sewed into our shirts.
This girl I graduated with was having something in one of the conference rooms and she called me by the wrong name.
I gave her the look that said, 'We went to school all those years and my name is sewn into my shirt how could you get that wrong!'
After my look she looked at my shirt and said, "Oh sorry, Hey it looks like your Celtics are putting together a great team though"

This made me very proud that after 10 years and although she couldn't even remember my name with it right in front of her she had no problem remembering my love for the Celtics!

Yup, TP for you.  I've used this actual test on girls who claim to be Celtics fans (no offense to you women reading this).  They do not get it right.  I will say though, that I've been through the ups and downs of the last 20 years, and my favorite player is Rondo.  I appreciate PP, and all he's done..and he's great, but he was never my favorite player at any one time.  And still is not...

Ask them what they think Allan Ray is going to be up to this off-season.  If they smugly correct you that "it's Ray Allen", punch them in the face.  They're not a diehard.

That's a much better test!!!

And I consider myself a Celtic die-hard, but Paul isn't my favorite player... Rondo is.  It would give me the most joy to see Paul win a championship, but the player I enjoy watching most is #9.

And my all-time 3 favorite Celtics are:

1. Bird
2. Antoine
3. Dana Barros

...so, I don't know what that says about me?

being a die hard, been through the bad times celts fan is sort of like discovering a band before everyone else knew they were good, then when they get good, you're like, well I was listening to them since their first EP...I remember liking Our Lady Peace years before they got big in America (thanks random Canadian Music Channel) then all of a sudden they have a couple big hits, are playing city hall plaza, and you're like, I knew them when 3 albums ago... I welcome the bandwagonners, as long as they commit themselves to getting to know the team and game, don't ask dumb questions at important moments (why does Rondo wear his headband upsidedown?), and dont' abandon ship when the times are down...(this last one is a hard one to imagine them not doing though)

Great analogy, I love it, TP for you!  I totally feel you on this one too, because I feel this way on just about everything: music, sports, fashion, etc. and have it happen to me time and time again.  People jump on the bandwagon all the time, and they act like they know about somebody/something and then when you ask them about it they reveal that their knowledge of this person's/thing's success only goes back as far as the mainstream success does.  Although I will admit, sometimes it's tough, it's hard to know about something when it gets absolutely no exposure...

I love your post but I disagree about KG. Although a lot of fans who didn't care that much would say KG, I think a lot of diehards would say KG because he represents our turnaround. I do like Paul Pierce I especially liked him early in his career. There was a large portion of his career where he said f it I'm shooting jumpers, I'm not driving to the hole it doesn't matter because we aren't going to win anyway. I loved Antoine am a huge TA fan (when he's healthy) and loved D-West and Ryan Gomes. About Batista, I feel like he would have helped us more than Sam (I am not a big Sam fan) but wasn't it a mutual cut because he didn't want to ride the bench?

But then again, I've never claimed to be a Celtic die-hard.... as I've said all season, I'm on loan from the TWolves while their management continues to run the team into the ground and our entire history is fighting for a championship in Boston.

haha that cracked me up. tommy point big ticket.
