Only if he becomes a successful coach.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

Horry's also gotten quite the rep as a dirty player in recent years, which doesn't help.

Hall of Fame should be for players that you feel compelled to tell your kids about.  Horry's never been more than a role player.  Dennis Rodman's an interesting comparison; he's got plenty of rings AND he was, for a long time, an absolutely dominating rebounder and defender.  If he's not getting into the Hall (even if partially off-court schenanigans), no way Horry deserves more than a cursory consideration.

For what? He's been one of the most inconsistent players in the NBA for years ... really a silly question, there's no way he should be a Hall-of-Famer.

Here's an interesting stat.

Horry's been in the league sixteen years.  In his third year, he played ~32 minutes a game.  In his fourth, he played 37.

In only one other season did he average more than thirty minutes a game (plus 22 games playing for the Lakes in '96-'97).

Only twice over the past decade has he played even 25 minutes a game!

If Robert Horry's COACHES aren't considering him good enough to play more than half the game...   why on Earth would anyone think he's worthy of the Hall of Fame?

No, he's not a hall of famer. To me, the hall is for the best players. Yes, he's been a winner but to me you have to do more. Steve Kerr was a part of 5 tittle winners, is he a hall of famer? Ron Harper won 4 or 5 is he? What about Horrace Grant and his 4?

I still have hope for DJ ... he's GOT to get in soon ... seriously! Truly a travesty, especially this year, and I think common sentiment will win out eventually. But Horry ... that's a joke, really.

I said yes to Horry, but would say no to Kerr (and Harper and Grant)
I said yes to Horry because I viewed him as a vital cog on multiple champhionship teams, even though Kerr and Harper and Grant were the same, I say no to them because I don't view them as important and vital as Horry.  I don't think every player who contributes to champioship teams deserves to be in, just like I don't think every player with good to great stats deserves to be in.

Also I see a lot of people pointing to stats in this discussion.  Does good stats over several years get you in the Hall?  Should we make arrangements for Stephon Marbury's and Vince Carter's induction ceremonies now?

It's not all about stats, it's not all about winning (but I do put alot more weight on winning than anything else), it's not all about any one thing.  It's not "great stats = automatic election", or "multiple championships = automotic election".  I think every player should be measured differently, or at least I don't think every player should be measured the same.

And those who said "right place, right time" this is a Celtics blog right?  How many former Celtics could we say the same thing about.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

I think he should be in the Hall of Fame. Horry has been of the game's truly exceptional role players and I think the Hall of Fame should recognize the select few that can lay claim to that.

16 seasons. Playoffs every year. 14-15 years his team was a contender for the title. 7 NBA Championships.

One of the great role players. 6-10 combo forward with great quickness and strength. Throughout his career he was one of the smartest players in the game. An excellent defender who could defend anyone on the opposing team's frontline while also capable of pressuring guards in the backcourt and switching onto guards in the halfcourt in single coverage. Great one-on-one defender. Great help defender. Protected the rim. A solid rebounder. A very good passer. A quality shooter with great range. Brilliant understanding of spacing with very good movement off the ball.

I rate Horry as the second best big man on his teams for 12-13 years out of his 16 year career.

A truly exceptional glue guy who covered whatever hole that needed to be filled in order for his teams to win. Play small and beat up the Suns, no problem. Play big and fight the Knicks and Sonic, no problem. You need shooting, no problem. Duncan is in foul trouble, you need me to protect the rim, no problem.

An incredible role player. A great winner. Horry belongs in the Hall of Fame but he won't get the vote.

I'd like the Hall of Fame to recognize the select few, the best role players ever to play the game.

Meh.  If he was good enough to be a Hall of Famer, he wouldn't have BEEN a role player, he would have been a star.  Tim Duncan could be the best role player of all time if he just weren't QUITE so good.

Stars belong in the Hall of Fame.  Great role players deserve to be reminisced about twenty years hence in the dark corners of the pub.

Horry (playoff statistics):

'93-'94 Rockets: 11.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 43.4% shooting
'94-'95 Rockets: 13.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 44.5% shooting
'99-'00 Lakers: 7.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 40.7% shooting
'00-'01 Lakers: 5.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 36.8% shooting
'01-'02 Lakers: 9.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 44.9% shooting
'04-'05 Spurs: 9.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, 44.8% shooting
'06-'07 Spurs: 4.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 41.7% shooting

Career playoff averages: 8.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 42.6% shooting

In terms of being a "vital cog", maybe you can make that argument for Horry's Houston years, but the rest of his numbers are fairly pedestrian.  He's hit some big shots, but so have Steve Kerr and Derek Fisher.

Horry has won seven championships because he has been fortunate / smart enough to play with three of the top ten big men in NBA history, Hakeem, Shaq, and Duncan.

I would actually consider Grant and Harper, (especially Horace ... one of the most under-rated players in history), but Horry has never been more than mediocre, except for his "big shots", and that's nowhere near the kind of accomplishment to be afforded a HOF nod ... not remotely.
