Wow, ESPN is unloading on the Celtics as the biggest loser in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to Miami.
Basically saying we would have had the best 1-2 punch in the NBA and would have addressed our biggest weaknesses if we had acquired him instead of Miami.
Without Giannis, ESPN says we are left with the same roster issues that led to the early playoff exit with no clear path to a strong upgrade back to serious title contention.
If all that is not enough, they added the additional possibility of an unhappy Jaylen Brown to deal with going forward.
I can agree with many of their points, but if our deal was not going to include Bobby Portis and was going to require the young players and additional draft picks that the Bucks were reportedly demanding from us, there is no way I would have given away that much to complete the deal.
I don?t really like listening too much to the media because it?s often just a lot of hype to farm clicks, but I think they?re right to an extent and is probably what many of the people who voted for Giannis were thinking:
1) I do think Tatum-Giannis would?ve been the best duo in the NBA
2) Giannis would?ve addressed our issues, especially in strengthening our inside game (which Brad also mentioned in his season-end presser)
3) My confidence isn?t high on this roster. I don?t think we?re first round fodder but it does look like this team (as currently constructed) hasn?t created any meaningful separation from other teams. The path back to the finals probably hinges mostly on health aka if other teams are injured and we aren?t.
But yeah, the Heat deal was way too rich. I don?t think Giannis would?ve been worth 4 future 1st rounders or something.
I hope Brad has more tricks up his sleeve. The offseason is long and full of possibilities.
