I am listening to Tim Legler talk about the draft.
He spoke glowingly about the Lakers pick Cameron Carr. Both Legs and A Mares spoke about how excellent his shooting mechanics were. His shot looks beautiful. But it doesn't go in as often as you would expect it to (37.4% 3PT). Both expected that to go in more often as he ages. He has a brilliant foundation. Mechanics, high release point. They also said being in college where you a star man versus in the NBA playing off ball with Luka are completely different shots. NCAA stars sometimes look worse shooters than they actually are due to that defensive attention. They think this could be the case here.
A stat here on Carr's shooting. So he took 123 catch and shoot 3s in college but 92 of those catch and shoot 3s were classified as guarded. He shot 41% on them.
These stats are from a Jason Timpf video. He is a Lakers fan I believe. His video title is "first great Lakers draft pick in years". So this reinforces what Legler was talking about above about how Carr was rarely open and had higher degree of difficulty shot attempts in college than he will have in the NBA. Carr will get more open 3s playing alongside Luka.
Timpf also noted that it was impressive how Carr was willing to take and made such a high percentage of guarded 3s. Again noting the high release point on his shot. That tends to be the difference between a guy who can take 5-6 threes a game or a guy who can take 8-10 threes per game. Are you willing to take them when they are only semi-open? Luke Kennard for example is not willing to take them. He shoots a great percentage but only on medium volume.
-----------
Carr took 206 threes overall. 123 were catch and shoot. So I presume the rest where off the dribble 3s.
He rated in the 93rd percentile in college basketball for spot up jump-shots. I believe this is 2s and 3s combined. That is a great signal for how well he can play off ball with Luka.
Carr shot 65% on spot up 2 pointers. Timpf noted he moved well without the ball to create different angles for close out defenders. Timpf also liked how well Carr attacked close outs. He did not just settle for 3s. He attacked the close out and then attacked the rim. He shot 67% at the rim.
He shot 61% on 122 layups on the season.
..........
This guy sounds like he might be able to start for LAL next season. Athleticism, defense, outside shooting, role player offense. Check, check, check, check.
