What makes them reputable?  When is the last time any of them broke anything?

The only reliable reported is Shams in my opinion.  When he says something happened, it most likely did.  The rest of the guys are just paid promoters to attract clicks and eye balls.

I think the second best guy out there may be Chris Haynes, who is fairly reliable when he reports something as fact.

What is Herro's projected extension? Because yeah I really would not want to extend him either, especially since it's likely in the 45M+ range like Reaves and others I assume

Yeah, that contract would scare me. He will be unrestricted too. Hard to play hard ball with him.

I would be happy to pay him around $30-35mil. I wouldn't want to go above that. He is not worth $40+mil.

It's because all of them are speculating. None of them have a clue what's really going on but as talking heads they have to try and say something. The only person I trust with breaking news is Shams, and only when he phrases it as actual reporting, as opposed to providing his opinion (which he does on Inside the NBA if he is asked).

When they phrase things like "I heard that" or "my source thinks" or "a league executive mentioned" or something like that I know they're guessing like the rest of us

By reputable I just mean more the reporters who provide the actual reporting that trade talks are developing and such like that, not podcasters or people who debate like Bill Simmons, KOC, etc. Lowe used to be that guy but now with the Ringer I don't think he's really a reporter-type, more analysis and obviously he's on the show with Simmons.

Stein is legit too, yeah he doesn't really break actual transactions but his reporting and articles I like a lot. He's tapped in similar to Haynes IMO, Haynes also has the benefit of knowing some players and their camps really well including Tatum.

But yeah Shams is the gold standard but he'll only tweet about it when the trade officially happens.

The pro Heat narrative that is out today is coming from Miami straight to Windy. Windy has no idea what is going on other than what Miami is feeding him. Interesting how the mo moved to Boston over the weekend and now Windy is playing damage control for the Heat on Monday.

I think that's the point, if you listen to how they phrase things it's different when they are speculating vs when they have something tangible to report. Because most of these reporters wear dual hats now, they report actual news, but they are now also expected to speculate based on their opinions.

They have a lot of team options on players they might be willing to move on from anyway. Bogdanovic, Lopez, and Batum are $31 million in salary, so if their package is based mostly around picks, they can send some expiring deadweight along, without really subtracting from their team next year, since those guys are not terribly likely to be on it at their respective salaries.
