Analytically, the Cavaliers beat the Knicks in the ECF 4-1!
Analytics has a part in sports, but the sports would becoming dominated by it is becoming a mistake. The Mazzulla 3-point philosophy also stems from it. Baseball now is almost entirely numbers/analytics and even managers no longer make many decisions or in-game adjustments since the spreadsheets and formulas have already computed the plan.
The former players were literally laughing at not taking the midrange shot on the 76ers pick and roll coverage. Mazzulla is just stubborn.
I still replay the final few minutes of the Game 7. Yes Jaylen missed a mid-range that's usually automatic, but all the other possessions were just jacking up 3s when it was still 99-98. Maxey didn't even hit the layups until the final minute, it was there for the taking.
Same thing in 2025, those 20+ point blown leads in Game 1 and 2 were all because they kept firing away from 3 in the second half. And it happened to the Spurs in Game 4 as well where they choked the 29 point lead.
Sure, but in game 5 we went 1-14 from the paint in the 4th quarter. We blew a game missing threes and a different game missing 2s.
Go back a couple years vs. Indiana when we swept them. 3 close games out of four, and in the 4th quarters we took half of our shots from 3 and made 40% of them. It won us the series and sent us to the Finals. It is not as if the strategy has not had its playoff successes too. Nothing will work all the time, and the Celtics have tried other things that also have not worked.
It is not just strategy. It is also personnel. The Celtics have three players who can get to the rim. Tatum, who uses his length but was hurt this year and less aggressive. Jaylen, who uses his strength and is most likely to be frustrated by the different whistle in the postseason. (Last year he played again the Knicks with a torn meniscus, which everyone has seemingly forgotten when assessing the failures against the Knicks). And Pritchard, who seems to struggle in the postseason. The team needs one more. Brad said as much in his posf-elimination press conference. The team, including Joe, knows it needs to create more penetration. They are just lacking the players.
