The set of trades I proposed yielded the roster below.  The salary of that team is ~186.157 million which while above the cap, is below the projected luxury tax line. And it would be fairly easy to drop that down even further and actually get below the cap next year if desired.  Several of those contracts expire after next season, so cap room will be had by summer of 2027 regardless.  Trading someone like Vassell or Brooks during the season for an expiring lower salary (and a draft pick) could maybe even get the team under the cap for 2026, or would certainly could free up a max level spot for 2027.

PG - Sheppard, Pritchard
SG - Vassell, Podz, Fontecchio
SF - Brooks, Hield, Scheireman
PF - Smith, Eason
C - Stewart, Tillman
10 + 28 + Tatum on IR + 36 (Stash or 2way)
dump Walsh or trade 28 for a future pick

The team then tanks next year and adds its own lottery pick to Sheppard and 10, and infuses the team with young high-level talent (not to mention Podz, Smith).  Tatum then comes back and you still have some decent players around him, but have the young pieces needed to build a new championship core or trade for one (there were also other future 1st rounders allowing for a 1st heavy trade if one became available).

Obviously different trade packages could yield a similar result, but I just don't see this current team ever competing again with the same core.  The age, health, and most importantly money just don't make it feasible in my view.  Had Tatum not gotten hurt, it is a different discussion, but I believe his injury has ended this run.

What are your expectations for Reed Sheppard? How good do you expect him to be?
hard to say since he didn't play much. Certainly at least quality starter, but all star level isnt out of the question.  He is very young and talented. The more of thst talent level tou have the more likely you are to find the ones that work out.

Trade 3 with San Antonio
Holiday for Vassell

Jrue for Devin Vassell is a trade that interests me. Much younger player. Quality starting SG. Well rounded skill-set. Strengths are not high but weaknesses are few.
The question is why would the Spurs do that deal.  They're a young team who finished 13th in the West.  Jrue isn't going to move the needle for them.  Vassell is 10 years younger, on a better contract and as productive.   Going to have to give up at least a 1st assuming Spurs would even consider it.
vassell is repetitive there and the Spurs are clearly going to try to win.  I think Jrue would give them what they hoped Chris Paul was going to give them. And Jrue is currently better than Vassell. So Spurs make a push this summer and give up a guy that long term is fine, but nothing special for the better player and better fit in the short term.  Maybe they don't do it, but it is a reasonable trade for both teams from a value standpoint.

More I look at potential Jrue and KP deals the more depressed I get.

I just see no path to saving significant money in these trades without giving up really valuable draft compensation.

Brooklyn's the only team with space and they have zero interest in additional picks this season. So they'll only play ball if we give them either future firsts or players they view as long term pieces.

The Holiday and KP trades themselves seem like they won't save us much or any money. Maybe Detroit decides they love KP but other than that we seem pretty screwed.

The guys we have a realistic chance at getting back in those deals are guys like Fontechio, Stewart, Hachimura, Vanderbilt, Klay Thompson, Gafford, PJ Washington, Bogdanovich, Dunn, Eubanks

Now a few of these guys like Dunn might be easily flippable, but guys like Hachimura, Stewart, Klay, Gafford, Washington and Bogdanovich are all above MLE money so we'll either need to take money back or find someone willing to take them into a TPE. That leaves the Hawks, Nets(not interested), Heat and Kings as the only possible suitors. That leaves me pessimistic about our chances.

I think Holiday and Hauser get traded. Ultimately though I think we end up holding on to KP, it doesn't seem like the interest is there and his PVS doesn't help much either. Might be better off hoping he recovers and if he does, maybe see if you can keep him at a discount. Even with his durability issues I wouldn't just want to "dump him" or let him walk for nada.

Now we still need to add another PF/C this offseason because relying on him and a 39-year old Horford alone would be foolish. Kornet/Queta are decent backups, that's it. I would explore moves where we can get back a PF/C in a deal, or try to get one in the Draft you like

I like Vassell, but isn?t the point of trading Jrue to cut salary. Devin is not an expiring. He?s making $27M/year and is under contract for 4 years.

I would trade Jrue for Devin Vassell as a basketball trade. Not a cap dump. Jrue was better than Vassell last year and probably will be next year but I like having Devin Vassell here for the next 3-5+ years over keeping Jrue.

I like the idea of D White and D Vassell together in the backcourt alongside Jaylen and Tatum as our forwards as our new core moving forward. That is a fun group with a longer window to compete for a title.

I am not counting on Porzingis as part of the core moving forward. Not unless he proves he can stay healthy. If he does, we chose Zinger over D Vassell and then cap dump Vassell at some point in the future. That should be easy enough. He is a nice player.

But geting a young guy / prime age guy in return for an old player like Jrue who can extend our window ... that is a huge win. Even if we take a small stap back in the immediate sense. Which is less important / urgent today given Tatum's injury recovery situation.

Sure if the only trade you make is that and are doing it for salary purposes, but neither is true of what I posted.

Does the Spurs getting the #2 pick make them less interested in a win-now move like Jrue Holiday? Particularly a win-now move involving such an old player (short term window).

It looked like they were moving into win-now territory with D Fox and Wemby. But now with S Castle's late season growth & the probable addition of Dylan Harper with the #2 pick, are they still in win-now territory? Or they in a wait-and-see hold?

It doesn't look like either S Castle or D Harper will be ready to play a leading role on a contender in the near future. They need time to grow. If they were to acquire a Jrue Holiday, they would be wasting Jrue's best years on their worst years as they learn on the job.

They 100% should be win now. Wemby is going into year 3, they just traded for Fox who will be 28 this year.

I agree that they should be in terms of Wemby and Fox. I just don't think they are anymore. Not with 2 blue chip prospects like D Harper and S Castle.

I think they need to trade those guys or at least one of those guys to bring in a more established player. You can carry one of those guys as they learn their trade and still compete at a high level. Hard to do it with both of them.

---------------

I was already frustrated with the lack of urgency by the Spurs to win with Wemby there. They have been babying him. Putting no responsibility / accountability on him. Slow walking him. He is too good for that. He is not some raw prospect that needs 5 years to develop. He is already an All-Star player. He is not far off becoming a top 10 player in the league. It would make me angry watching San Antonio and how they were babying Wemby.

Getting D Fox was a major move in that direction.

Now getting the #2 pick and a prospect in D Harper who will need time to develop puts the team back in an opposite direction. Along with S Castle showing star talent late last season. He needs playing time to develop. Both of them do. Neither are ready to play big minute roles on a team making a title push.

This trade makes a lot of sense for both SA and Boston:

Out: Jrue Holiday

In: Barnes(exp $19M), Wesley(exp $4.7M), Champagnie $3M.

Celtics: White, Brown, Hauser, Tatum, KP.
Bench: Pritchard, Schieriman, Champagnie, Kornet, Queta,  FA, FA

Spurs: Fox, Holiday, Vassell, Sochan, Wemby
Bench: Castle, Johnson, Mamu, Biyombo.

Trading Hauser would be crazy, IMO. He?s 27 and on a very team friendly deal. Sam is also a solid two way player. Has good chemistry with the J?s.

I?d be fine getting rid of Tillman, Davison, Walsh if they need to trim additional salary next year. KP is a wild card, but he?s still in his prime. I?d keep him and roll the dice. If healthy, that?s a very competitive team for Boston. Jrue is a big upgrade over CP3.

You trade for Barnes and Wesley but you don't include them on the Celts roster.
Where'd they go?

Hauser is gone.  Saves way too much salary/tax to replace him with a minimum contract player.  Kornet is a free agent and won't be back as it will cost too much to resign him.  Tillman, Davison and Walsh make the minimum.  Getting rid of them doesn't trim salary because they'd be replaced with other minimum players.

Jrue isn't going to move the needle for them.  They finished 13th in the West with 34 wins.  They'd need to gain at least 14 wins to even be competitive.  They need Giannis to do that.

Wemby played only 46 games last year. D Fox arrived mid-season. Those two guys playing a full season will deliver those wins.

Jrue's role would be to iron out the supporting cast around them. Jrue, H Barnes or D Vassell, Sochan, Keldon Johnson. Then the two young guards S Castle & D Harper.

They need a healthy season of Wemby, a full season from Fox, and growth from their youth including Castle to be competitive in the west. They don't need Giannis for those things.

Jrue would help as a veteran glue guy and give them a high-end defender at the guard spot. It's silly to think that he wouldn't help this team significantly.
