Also they are paying FVV 42M to be a role player.
They have a team option on him for $44mil next season. Gotta think they opt out of that. He is more of a $20-25mil player moving forward.
He is showing some physical decline too in terms of quickness & driving past people. Not doing it as well this year as previous years. With his dodgy shot, that can make him quite limited offensively on off nights.
No way FVV is on the team next year. He was never worth that contract anyway; they just needed someone. But it might be valuable salary filler in a trade, so they could pick up the option and send him off with a couple of draft picks.
I think we all knew Houston wasn't ready yet, but credit to them for getting the 2-seed. It'll be really interesting if it ends up being 6 vs 7 in the 2nd round, but that is how it is shaping up. Please let it shape up that way, because I do not want the Lakers with a chance at anything.
There were reports that Houston were in talks over a contract extension with FVV a month or two ago. It sounds like they want to keep him. They like what he does for them. So, I wouldn't be sure that he is gone. I expect they will restructure the contract and look to keep him long term.
FVV has his flaws but he is still hugely important to the success of that team. They were 41-19 in the 60 games he played (56 win pace) compared to only 11-11 without him (41 win pace).
Those young guys rely heavily on his leadership & ability to run their offense. He is the only guy on the team who can run an offense. They were dreadful to watch while he was out injured. It was Jalen Green pretending to be a PG. Disaster. And FVV is still a very good defensive player despite being a small guard. Great instincts, reads the game well, very strong small guard who can handle himself against bigger opponents, strong lateral quickness.
