Brissett is gonna start the season but idk... Maye looked so much better today. And that's also with less talent on the field with more of NE's backups coming in. Brissett's done nothing the first two preseason games and had that hideous INT. Fans are gonna become restless if Brissett gets off to an awful start.

Guess Maye might just be Week 1 starting QB. Or Joe Milton if he outperforms both of 'em

Looking at the highlights wow Lowe did the best impersonation of a turnstile I?ve ever seen?I would definitely not be starting Maye if Lowe is ?supposed? to be protecting him at left tackle. A wet paper bag would have provided more resistance than he did  ???

Brissett is a placeholder punching bag so Maye, Milton etc don't get killed by this horrible line and receiving corps. This is not an NFL-caliber offense and won't be anytime soon.

Funny quote about Milton.... if you need Milton to throw it 80 yards, he'll throw it 80 yards. If you need Milton to throw it 5 yards, he'll throw it 80 yards

Yeah, that was a funny quote. Doesn?t seem to hold true, though. Milton threw a nice screen pass with his first throw of the game last night. Has some touch.

His issue is every throw is a laser. And that includes screen passes to RBs which are dropped because he's throwing it at them 5 yards away around 90 MPH  :P

Yeah for sure. Just baffling to me they had all offseason to address the line and honestly, if Onwenu is playing RG instead of RT then idk if you can even say they have tackles. Roster malpractice.

I do feel better about our receiving group this year than previous ones. Even 2019 with Brady in the final year, I think this season's could be better than that also. I hope Boutte makes the team, I know he's had a few drops but overall he seems to get open and can make some plays (remember that one handed snag if you watched last night?). Just move on from Thornton he's always hurt anyway. I think I might also prefer Wallis over Reagor, at least he can seemingly play some WR as well while Reagor has sucked at it his whole career, plus Wallis also has pop as a returner.

I was great to see a good solid sample size of Maye.  I was reassured, he looked good.  It still appeared to me that the offense was being simplified, but that may be as much about the OL as the QB.  Also, we have a bunch of really young receivers who probably are still digesting the more complex variations of the scheme.

It is still hard to judge how ready Maye is.  He looked a lot more ready this game than what you were hearing from practice (and saw in the first preseason game).  I am not sure how close to ready he is.  I suspect that he would look a lot less ready if this had been a regular season game.

The OL is clearly not ready.  I do not know how the OL readiness should impact the QB decision.  If Maye is ready, should they hold him out because the OL is not ready?  I am just not sure.  My feeling is that once Maye is ready, he should play and not until.  Defining ready may not be clear cut.

I agree with this. My take is, Brissett really hasn't shown much in any of the preseason games while Maye has, even accounting for only taking 6 snaps last week. I personally don't think they should start Brissett just because the O-Line is bad and he's more "experienced", if Maye has shown more he should get the job. And if we're being honest, how can we even be sure the O-Line next year is gonna be better? What if it's just as bad, should Maye sit another season then because of it? At some point he's gonna have to deal with taking hits, identifying blitzes and scrambling. Some of that comes from actually playing.

People bring up Mac Jones but the thing with Mac was, he had a high floor and low ceiling and I'd argue that's what he was. I don't think it would have made much of a difference if he sat a year behind Newton.

I don't exactly think the Pats have the luxury of sitting out a guy for a full year because instances of guys who have done it and succeeded either (a) had a great to elite QB already playing (Rodgers, Favre, Alex Smith, etc. and even Bledsoe was pretty good in 2001) or (b) weren't already coming off a hideous season. NE went 4-13 last season. If they start like 0-6 this year or something then believe me, fan backlash is gonna be at an all-time high especially if Brissett's starting and not doing well. It'd be one thing if Brissett did well but the whole team sucked but in that case, there'd still be calls rightaway for Maye to come in and I think even the Krafts would succumb to this pressure.

The tackle position is a joke though. Lowe, Okorafor. YUCK.

Truth be told, I'm not a Zappe fan but even Zappe has looked better than Brissett this preseason, and it's not like Brissett is lighting it up in training camp either. He started "steady" but has tailed off while Maye has shown improvement each week.

Poor offensive line play has been a league wide problem for years. Offensive lineman don?t learn pro techniques in HS or college and they?re all running spread style offenses now, so that makes it difficult to evaluate talent. It can take 2-3 years before a lineman is ready to play and then they get labeled as a bust in their first year.

Edge rushers attract freak athletes because it?s a high profile and higher paying position. It?s tough finding enough players with the size and agility to compete against them and can learn the fundamentals and playbook. The league probably doesn?t have 64 starting quality tackles, never mind the backups.

Finally, the defense can move around and reposition themselves. The offensive lineman are going to be lining up in the same spot over and over. The defense is going to know their weaknesses and how to exploit them. It?s harder for the offense to exploit the same matchups on defense because they can easily adjust, whereas the defense can keep attacking the weakest link.

Since it?s so hard to put together a good line, the guys available are going to be career backups or you?re overpaying a free agent. Teams aren?t letting the core players walk if they can afford it. It?s really difficult to improve an offensive line in just a year. You need 2-3 years of the same guy and a good line coach with a consistent system.
