Celtics didn't pass on Giannis over money; Shams reveals what killed trade:
On Thursday Shams Charania of ESPN came out and shot that one down more definitely than anything we?ve heard to date. On the Pat McAfee Show, Shams was asked about the extension rumor and basically scoffed, shaking his head and making it clear that there was no validity to that report.
The breakdown with the Giannis, Boston conversations was very simple. The Celtics did not want to give up Hugo Gonzalez and/or Baylor Scheierman and another draft asset when the Bucks asked for that.
I don't know what to make of these "reports". Shams getting the scoop on the actual trade announcement is one thing, but this kind of detail? I have some doubt, but maybe.
So the deal could have been Brown, (3) firsts, and Scheierman or Hugo, and maybe both? That package is way better than the MIA package, unless you don't value Brown as higher than Herro. If you have Herro = Brown, then sure, maybe MIA is a better deal. But if you assume that Brown >>>>> Herro, than that BOS deal is way better than the MIA deal.
Another way to look at this. Say you did the PHI trade first. Would you then trade Paul George, Hugo, Scheierman, and 5 first (the 2 from PHI plus the 3 that MIL wanted) to MIL for Giannis?
I would probably do Brown + 3 picks, or Brown + Scheierman + 2 picks, but not Brown, Scheierman, Hugo, and 3 Picks.
