https://heavy.com/sports/nba/boston-celtics/jaylen-brown-trade-return-76ers-market-impact/

Interesting read.  If true it sheds light on why the C's got so little in return.

I don't think the Celtics felt respected by Brown and how he handles his business, nevermind his net-negative on the court. How dare he go around shutting down other teams who were interested in him. Very Kyrie-like.

Hate JB, hopefully he'll get booed mercilessly when the 76ers come to town.

Umm....yeah.  I don't see that happening.

The fact that you hate a guy who was a finals MVP and helped bring home a title to Boston says much more about you than anything about him.

Boy, if Jaylen does not think he got respect here, he'll the third of fourth option in Philly.   I think this could blow up in their face.

I think he'll probably average out to being about the 2nd option most nights. Some nights he'll take the most shots, others he'll be behind Embiid and Maxey, but Embiid is likely to get hurt at some point. I don't think he's clearly behind Maxey in the pecking order.

He'll be fine, probably end up high 20's in USG.

Despite their on-court success, [Shams] Charania described a changing dynamic inside Boston after Tatum returned from injury. Brown had established himself as the team?s primary option, creating tension when Tatum returned to a leadership role he had held throughout his career.

?When Jayson Tatum was coming back to the team, like this was Jaylen Brown?s team and he made it clear that people knew it was his team and Jayson Tatum had to basically just slide in,? Charania said. ?But Jayson Tatum has always been a man in Boston.?

I talked about this a year ago, that it was going to cause a hierarchy conflict, because the dynamic between them would have changed. I didn't know if both players, more so JB, would be able to sacrifice to go back to the way things were again. But I didn't expect JB to be traded for that reason (I did, and do, see the reason for it from a financial/team building point of view).

In any case, it's now Philly's problem how he fits in with Maxey and Embiid in the usage hierarchy.

I think the hierarchy thing is stupid.  That doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, but the two played nearly a decade together without any major problems. If Donovan Mitchell and James Harden can work nonsense like this out, why can't they?

Well they worked it out in 2024, and all the years before that, but back then Tatum was the clear 1 and Brown the 1A. But then Brown got a taste for being the featured guy, having the offense built around him and the shots he wanted to take. This is a gut feel but I'm guessing he probably wanted a scenario closer to what happened immediately after JT got back from injury and was playing more of a supporting role, only for that to change in the first round against Philly. Remember his comment "I wish we would have trusted what we had done before" and all the other ones about (I'm paraphrasing) "It's an adjustment having JT back but he's very important to what we're trying to do so I'm trying to do my best to adjust". I think that's what Shams was alluding to.

Not to say they couldn't have adjusted, but it's kind of like being in a company where you've always been the vice-president, working with the president, then the president has to take a year leave of absence and they put you in the top job, you like it because you get to run it the way you want, now he's back from leave and you have to go back to what you were doing before and he changes things back to the way it was done before, because that's what he's comfortable with. Some people can slide right back into the way things were, others might start advocating for more responsibility or even to be the one in charge.

I can sympathize with JB because I was in that position, where I got a taste for more responsibility and I liked it but when the boss came back they expected me to go back to the way things were but it was difficult for me because I felt I could do a better job than he could, and that I deserved my chance. Eventually I ended up leaving for another position elsewhere where I had more responsibility. It's not an exact parallel but I can kind of understand it if JB might have felt that way (again there's no evidence he did or didn't).

Possibly that's the scenario they envisaged, which might have reminded them of 2018-19 when individual power battles between Cryrie, the Jays, Smartacus, Hayward, Mook and Terry consumed the team. I'm certainly not suggesting that's the only reason, or even the main reason, JB got traded, but I'm guessing it was a factor, one among many, in the decision.

So George will wear 13, Conley will wear 44, and Robinson will wear 4.  Welcome guys!

13. Not a great number in Celtics lore

Is Delonte the only notable guy that wore it for multiple seasons?  Todd Day isn't notable, haha.

I miss Delonte, and wish him the best.  His story is one of the saddest in Celtics history.

I saw something maybe a month ago where Delonte did not even remember he once played in the NBA. I don't know if he was homeless or not.

If Hugo is playing another year of summer league, the organization still views him as a project player. I think the expectations that fans have for him this coming season is pie in the sky.

Jaylen played in summer league after his rookie season and then was an opening night starter.

Hugo averaged less than 4ppg last year and he is playing summer league again. If you think he is going to be a starter over White, George, or Pritchard, I will have what you are having.

Hugo was not even in the playoff rotation. He had several DNPs during the season. He is still a project at this point.

Progress with his 3 point shot would make the world of difference to his playing time. Same with Jordan Walsh. If either one of them develop a somewhat stable 3 pointer and they could go from borderline rotation players to 30 minute a night guys in a flash.

I see no point in Hugo being in SL.

He has already played at a higher level with Real Madrid, Boston Celtics and the Spanish National team.

Summer league is too short to work on things. It is more important for telling you what you need to work on. Hugo already knows what he needs to work on -- he needs a reliable 3 pointer to stay on the floor and play long minutes.

Summer league can also be useful to test things you have been working on since the season ended. First round and out. I suppose he has had 2 months. Maybe that is enough time to for a check-in to see how his work is going. I did not think it was that long at first blush.

If Hugo starts, it will probably look like this:

White
Hugo
George
Tatum
Queta

Pritchard is off the bench because that is where he has historically been most productive, not necessarily because he was "beat out" by anyone.  One of the random wings (HuBaWaHaHa) is likely to start at this point in my view (barring other roster changes).

Agreed -- the lack of a quality backup guard makes it highly likely Pritchard comes off the bench because that it was Mazzula did last season after the trade deadline when we had no quality backup guard. I expect one of the wings to start. I think Baylor should have the inside track on the position because he is most reliable of the young wings at this point.

----------

That lineup has been reminding me of the Detroit Pistons over the last week or so. Hugo in the Ausar Thompson stopper role. Queta in the Duren role. Tatum is Cade. PG13 was Tobias Harris. D White (well rounded guard) a different sort of player to Duncan Robinson (lethal shooter).

I have not been a fan of 2 non-shooters in the starting lineup over the last few years but DET did make it work. I wonder if BOS can.

https://heavy.com/sports/nba/boston-celtics/jaylen-brown-trade-return-76ers-market-impact/

Interesting read.  If true it sheds light on why the C's got so little in return.

My take away from this is the suggestion that Brown (or more likely his agent) was telling teams not to trade for him.  Sounds like Stevens was being open and Brown was taking advantage of that.  This could explain a few things.

First, Brown knew he was being offered to MIL.  If this is true, he had his agent tell MIL that he would not sign there or otherwise did not want to be traded their.  This would certainly explain why MIL was not so interested in trading for Brown.

How many other teams did Stevens potentially tip Brown off to?  Maybe Stevens didn't disclose any specific teams, but it was easy enough for Brown to figure out who BOS could be talking to.  If Brown was going around putting the kibosh deals, that would certainly explain why his market was diminishing.

Hard to know if this is true but it seems to make sense.  So if it is true, then it is really disappointing.
