Trade Brown for Giannis (for example):  Floor is making the playoffs every season.  Ceiling is winning a title.

Trade Brown for Spare Parts and Draft picks:  Floor is no playoffs for 3+ seasons.  Ceiling is to have a title contending team in 3-5 years maybe.

I see your point, but neither is guaranteed.  It would be impossible to predict given we don't what the latter would be.

I would not want to trade Brown for spare parts really.  I would swap him for a young and upcoming star or pieces that fit better around Tatum and that is a big difference from is posted above.    We don't have a balanced roster.  Half our team is wings of varying athletic ability and skills, and a lot of them are supposed to be shooters.   I think BS talked about adding athleticism and diversity on the offensive side.   We can't just cling the shoot the threes because, some nights they don't hit.

Here is what I heard from BS, we all hear things differently:

1)   We need a front court addition
2)   We need players who can score the ball in ways others than bombing threes.
3)   We need to get more athletic across the board.

What did you all hear?

Boston won't bottom out. They could have this year, but won't going forward.  They need to get younger players and draft picks from other teams and hope they end up high picks like woth what happened in the KG/PP trade.

I concur 100%

You want high pick like what happened in KG/PP trade, then trade Tatum for one of picks 1-3

No, you trade Tatum or Brown for several picks to a team that you think will screw it up.  So Sacramento, for example.

According to a report from ESPN?s Shams Charania, the Celtics were among several playoff teams that tried to land Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo in February.

The Celtics, Lakers, Knicks, Timberwolves, and Cavaliers all reportedly pursued Antetokounmpo.

According to Charania, the way those teams finish the playoffs will play a ?major? role in how aggressive they are in any upcoming pursuits this summer.

Charania used the words ?open for business? to describe where the Bucks are at in terms of fielding trade calls for Antetokounmpo.

It's an odd report, in that there were no rumors at the time and because any deal involving JB would have been way better than what other teams were dangling.  Maybe it was White * Simons.

Agreed. Brown played superbly during the regular season and carried the team very well. I really liked the way the team passed and moved the ball. I believe Giannis was still injured around that time too. Trading Brown for Giannis at the trade deadline would have meant the Cs saw tanking a better option.

Didn?t Brad make comments recently that he did not think the Cs were as good as their record. That they didn?t do well against the better teams during the regular season.

It was not that they weren?t as good as their record, but that there was more of a gap between them and the teams likely going to the Finals.  And the specific aspect was that he thought they needed someone in addition to Brown and Pritchard (and ultimately Tatum) to create more penetration on offense.  That against those top teams, going back to the playoffs last year even against Orlando, the defense becomes a lot more physical and we could not create enough opportunities inside where we broke down their defense, and thus the outside options became that much more difficult too.  But that discussion would not necessarily point to Jaylen being traded for Giannis.

Also, if you remember the news coming out of the Feb deadline regarding Giannis, it was that no one expected Giannis to be moved then, and teams were gauging what it would cost to trade for him during the offseason.  So that the Celtics called around the deadline does not mean that they thought a trade would happen then, regardless of who was included.

Tatum is better than SGA was those first few seasons in OKC when the team was growing.  Boston won't bottom out. They could have this year, but won't going forward.  They need to get younger players and draft picks from other teams and hope they end up high picks like with what happened in the KG/PP trade.

I think you are proving my point.  SGA is one of the best players of this generation.  Dybantsa will probably not be as good as SGA.  Maybe he will be, and maybe he will be no better than Markelle Fultz.  But even SGA took about 4 or so seasons to be as good as Brown is right now.

So for the next 3-4 seasons, critical seasons for Tatum's window, what is the likelihood that Dybantsa is going to be better than Brown over these critical seasons?  By the 4th or 5th season, sure, maybe Dybantsa passes Brown, maybe. And maybe by season 6 or 7, Dybantsa is the MVP, like SGA.  It is also a real possibility that he is never as good as Brown.

This is why to me, it makes no sense to trade Brown for picks or prospects, while keeping Tatum.  It would be better to trade both Tatum and Brown in that case.  But if the objective is to build the best team possible to win with Tatum, for say the next 2-3 seasons anyway, then it only makes sense to trade Brown for other good players.  Or of course, just keep Jaylen Brown.

This was his quote. Thats how I interpreted it.

"Though we did a lot of good things, we lost in the first round, and we were also 3-11 against the top three seeds in the West and the other top two in the East," Stevens said at the Auerbach Center. "And so we've got to get better. And that's been the communication in here, just talking to the team."

He also said that there won't be nearly as many teams playing to lose next year (implying the Celtics had an inflated win total) and that the team's margin for error needs to get bigger.

I know people think we aren't going to make major moves, but this is our worst two year stretch in the playoffs in over a decade. And it's not like Brad hasn't made major moves before; he just does it with a smile.

keeping Brown and Tatum isn't going to get it done. The team has proven thar the last 2 years.  If you keep both, they simply become a fun regular season team that will lose early in the playoffs.   They need to get younger and more draft capital.  That will give them the flexibility they need to make the necessary moves.  Can't go back in time and trade brown and white last summer, but they can trade them now before their value craters.  See what you get and reassess.  Maybe that means you move Tatum next summer, maybe it doesn't.  Minor changes on the edges is not going to get it done.

This is one of the winningest dues over the last 10 years. They've made it to the finals and won a finals. That right there rejects your argument that they are simply a fun regular season team and will lose early in the playoffs. These last two seasons have been disappointing, but there are good reasons for that.

But at the same time, is there a path forward that gives the Cs a better opportunity moving forward. Because this duo seems to not give a very large margin of error.

It may come to that (trading Tatum along with everyone else), but I don't feel we are at that point this season, and I doubt the Celtics feel they are either.  I am fine with seeing what they can do to make the team better and making another run at it.  That may include trading Brown, perhaps even for Giannis, or it may include other changes.

I am not worried that Brown or others would have more or less trade value.  I think they will have plenty of trade value now or later.  I see the team as something between the 67 pace team they were with Tatum in the regular season (I believe they were 13-3 with Tatum), and the team that lost in the first round.

Major rebuilds take time, usually 5 or more seasons of being bad for most teams.  I am not in any hurry to start that process.

10 years is a long time for 2 guys to play together.  We've seen that what 1 time where a team consistently won for 10 consecutive years or more with the same 2 top players (aand won a title).  That was the 10 years Magic and Kareem played together in LA.  Even the Russell Celtics had different 2nd players.  MJ and Pip had to take a break and reset.  Now obviously Malone and Stockton had a very long run, but they never could get over the hump (and the rest of the roster they could never get right).   Westbrook and Durant and Shaq and Kobe were ready to kill each other after 8 years and Kobe was a bench player the first couple of seasons together.

The Spurs had TD forever but they did have different 2nd players throughout his time there.  LeBron obviously changes teammates every few years.  Curry and Draymond had a nice run, but without Klay (and Durant) they don't win any titles.

The Celtics need to do something different or they will just keep losing in the 1st or 2nd round.  They needed a really deep and talented team and the right year to win one title, that isnt happening again.  And for as good as Tatum is, he isn't in the uber elite class of players that are the best player on multiple title teams.  Boston will not win another title without major changes to the roster.  And it may take a full rebuild. I wouldn't go full more this summer i.e. I'd keep Tatum, but even he may have to go next summer to truly rebuild back into a contender.

I have been watching a bunch of old Stockton & Malone games over the last year.

What can I say, i love watching them play basketball. They are one of the most iconic duos in NBA history. They play good ball. Won lots of games. Never won a title.

Even if Jaylen & Tatum never won another title, I'd be delighted to watch them for another 6-8 years together. There will be lots of good basketball & big playoff runs.

Or of course, just keep Jaylen Brown.
keeping Brown and Tatum isn't going to get it done.

I'm sure there will be but I want some titles in those runs.

I'm not ready to break up the band but I do see that Brad pretty much hamstrung himself in terms of assets he can use to bring in quality support players to put around the J's.  He doesn't have high quality young players to entice other teams.  He doesn't have more than the C's own picks with which to trade (and if he uses those, he's screwed for years afterwards depending on how the team performs).  He has some exceptions he can use to sign free agents or to gerryrig trades but the likelihood he stays under the apron a second year to reset the repeater tax will likely mean most if not all of those exceptions to unused or at best underused.
