Wait, Dallas is 4-0 unbeaten and top of the West ...
I thought they were struggling. Spurs, Nets, Grizzlies and Bulls are the four teams they have beaten. Okay, not great competition. First two games close. Third game a blowout.
Still, a surprise to see them top of the West.
1st 2 games had Irving, 2nd 2 did not. Coincidence?
Luka also has a negative on/off differential
That’s because they were outscored when Luka played with Kyrie. Luka without Kyrie is a positive on/off. In other words, it’s just Kyrie.
Not sure I follow this. Doncic is +30 overall, -5 with Irving, +35 without Irving. Irving is a drag so far but Doncic has been highly positive.
Because the Mavs net rating is 9.4, but Luka’s is 8.8, so technically they are 0.6 points better when Luka is off. However, Luka is -1.6 when he plays with Kyrie, and approximately 13.1 when he doesn’t play with Kyrie, so Luka’s negative on/off is due to the Kyrie effect, at least so far this year.
I guess I don't look at it that way. In terms of total +/- DAL is +36 (4 games, 192 minutes). Luka is +30 when he is on the court (4 games, 150 minutes). DAL is +6 when Luka is not on the court (42 minutes).
NRTG gets normalized to 100 possessions (which I am sure you know). Something must be getting distorted due to the number of possessions while Luka in out there vs. when he isn't. Garbage time could be distorting this also. I think DAL is going to continue to be fine if he is +7.5 during the time he is on the court in every game. It is impossible for me to see that as a problem. If anything, it is an indication that their bench is doing well also.
And as you suggest, once Kyrie gets his head out of his ###, Luka's numbers will be all that much better. Kyrie will come around. He will play well, he is still a very good talent. It may not last, but he will come around.
