Happy Friday everyone, and I hope we're all going to have a pleasant weekend. Or at least a decent one.

Maybe you've got something exciting planned, since it's midway through August. I can't speak to everyone else, but I know here in the Big Smoke we're seeing a rare blast of sunny weather - if you move to Fahrenheit, it's essentially going to be 75 and sunny (relatively speaking, anyway - we're all still running around looking like Casper the friendly Ghost) for the next week verging into the low eighties... positively scorching given the humidity (since we're on an island and all).

Interesting thing about the capital - there's loads of tributaries, waterways, canals, and all sorts of visible and invisible rivers sharing space with the underground, the overground, and the parks. I can walk 15 minutes and be on a canal full of amazing house boats and other watercraft.

Some of those watercraft you can rent out, fill it with a bunch of your friends, coworkers, family, &c. and have someone put you about while you make like a glass of water and get thoroughly drunk. In the US, you'd call that a Booze Cruise. Something that would mean something fairly different if you were a fan of the Utah Jazz a few years ago.

Some of you will have already guessed correctly. Some of you will have skipped all that drivel and gone down to this line after you saw the bolded lettering - We're picking up the Booze Cruise himself! Ole Sharpie Hairline himself, Carlos Boozer!

Carlos Boozer came out very high on 4 of 5 areas of my rankings (1) scoring efficiency (2) passing (3) jump-shooting (4) rebounding.

The one he did badly on was defense.

But many of the PFs in this draft have some problems somewhere in their skill-set. Boozer was more well-rounded offensively than most of them. And a super rebounder.

Boozer is great value for this point in the draft, Kern.

I actually missed him on my big spreadsheet on the first go-around. To be honest I wasn't in love with his game when he was a player but I needed one more body at PF and he's more than fine soaking up whatever minutes are left. And he's obviously a cromulent four.

This is one thing that's come back to bug me a bit - I tend to go for guys who play a lot of minutes, because I think load management is silly (personal bias) - would they all be as effective in the modern, fewer minutes per game NBA? Some would, some I'm not so sure of.

I like the guys who moved into bench roles and showed they could be successful there. Like Bobby Jones or Dan Majerle. I trust them a little more to perform.

Jamal Mashburn

He would have been dominant in the modern era.  A SF the size of Draymond Green, putting up 22 / 6 / 6 / 39% 3PT%.  And he was a beast in the post.

Great pick, another guy I lost track of.

The Nets will add a playmaking defender and select Don Buse. We will likely take 76-77 when Buse led the league in apg and spg, while playing stifling defense in general.  6 time 1st team all defense (though 2 were in aba).  Solid 3 point shooter for the era hitting 38.6% on 2.3 attempts his most prolific season.  At 6'4" he can compliment Cheeks in a defensive oriented back court, or otherwise is a perfect backup to play make for others and hit the open 3 when necessary.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

At 10.5, the ChiBulls select a backup PG, 5x All Star…

John Wall!

Good luck keeping up with a guy this fast and athletic in this league.

I was always disappointed Pat Riley and Miami did not get more out of Mash in Miami.

That should have been a dynamite Big Three with Zo, Timmy and Mash but they could never get the three of them working well together. Mash struggled for consistency. Then Timmy got old and Mash filled his role. He started to play well and be more impactful but Timmy wasn't able to do it anymore. Never got all 3 of them firing on all cylinders.

Mashburn had a great interview in the Knuckleheads podcast. Great guy. Has had some great success in the business world post-NBA.

Mash also credited Paul Silas for giving him more freedom to perform than Riley gave him in Miami. Said he didn't fit in right there. Said Silas let him bring the ball upcourt more. Be more of a ball-handler, playmaker, and create his own shots from all over. Gave him more freedom. Said Silas was definitely a veteran's coach though. He wouldn't work as well with young players which one of the Knuckleheads who played for Silas agreed with.

I also thought Zo was part of the problem with Mash's underperformance in Miami. Zo's inability to pass out of the post made it difficult to run the offense through him. Made it difficult to keep everyone else involved. It was really only Zo and the ball-handler Timmy and a bunch of spot up shooters / cutters. No room for Mash.

Yeah, I was thinking of drafting Buse also. Similar to Jason Kidd in many ways. Less creative passing. Less dribble penetration. But same floor leadership, ball security, defense, rebounding, possession creation.

Great player for this format where you have so many scorers much like J-Kidd was a boss for Team USA teams.

I was going back and forth between him and the guy I'm about to pick, so thanks for making it easier for me. Great pick!
