No offense to Tiny, who was great, but I don't see how someone can think that Tiny was better than Bird.

I'm pretty sure even Tiny doesn't think he's better than Bird or a top 10 player of all time.

Nobody with Karl Malone in their top 10 should be taken seriously.
Karl Malone is more defensible than Tiny

... but neither is defensible over Larry or Duncan.

If you made those two substitutions, with the caveat that it doesn't include active players, it's not bad.

Jerry West
Oscar Robertson
Elgin Baylor
Wilt Chamberlain
Bill Russell
Michael Jordan
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Magic Johnson
Karl Malone Larry Bird
Tiny Archibald Tim Duncan
Agreed, although I would probably have another big there (Shaq or Hakeem) over Elgin Baylor.

No Bird is criminal, as is no LeBron. Dr J might be a little bit jealous that these two SFs beat him out quite comfortably.

“Hey, man, I got no problem with Dr. J’s list,” O’Neal said. “He’s the great Dr. J. He paved the way for all of us. He can say what he wants and nobody should say a [dang] thing about it.”

O’Neal then gave his top 10, adding more fodder to the conversation by giving a first and second team.

He said his first team, in no particular order, was Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, LeBron James and then [expletive] me.”

“That ain’t no disrespect to Malone, [Charles] Barkley and Kareem,” O’Neal said. “Hey, that’s my list. Understand what I’m saying?”

O’Neal said coming off his bench would be Curry, Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, Malone and Isiah Thomas.

“Yeah,” O’Neal said. “And you can quote me on that.”

O’Neal paused for a moment, adding, “also, you got to put Kareem on that second team too,” which, of course, is now a top 11.

Again, no Larry Bird is equivalent to a really, really uninformed and ignorant opinion.

Iverson is ridiculous.

Yep.

And, I may be the biggest Karl Malone fan on this board -- at least until the child raping story came out -- but there is no argument where he's better than Larry Bird.

People forget players all the time when they're coming up with these lists, opinions differ, and so on. I wouldn't read too much into it - and if Dr. J thinks Bird isn't top 10, then it is what it is - for my (lack of) money, since these are static opinions that don't actually matter or impact anything, evaluating reason & rationale is less fun - unless someone can get Dr. J on the line and get him chatting about his list.

Likewise, Shaq's more or less just having a go at Chuck with his top 11.

According to Vecsey, Jackson is gone.

This just in: Mark Jackson told me he was let go by ESPN. He had two years left on his contract. Jeff Van Gundy was let go weeks ago. Doc Rivers and Doris Burke are now Mike Breen’s partners…

Wow, this seems strange.  Doris Burke and Doc Rivers are not going to be all that much better, if better at all.  I don't know how the contracts work but this feels like cost cutting.

Jackson sucked. His act wore thin years ago and he brought very little to telecasts besides the banter with JVG.   He was full of cliches and cheesy taglines.

100%. It's been a long time since he was in the booth, but Doc was a pretty decent colour commentator to my memory.

$62m a season? That's extreme for someone who hasn't played many games since the bubble

And is going to be on the wrong side of 30. Final year of that extension is going to be $66m at age 34.

I think that is the bigger thing to me.  34 big guy, injury prone getting 66 million that last year.  So his per year average is $62 million/year, larger than Jaylen’s so it won’t take long before JB’s extension will be run of the mill.
